Is it one of the best cameras in the world today...? And would it be worth upgrading from the original?

As a very happy Nikon Z8 owner, I got to say the R5 II looks amazing and that action priority AF is insane.
If I was a professional sports shooter, I think this would be a no-brainer just for that feature alone.

I like Canon bodies a lot. They feel great in the hand. BUT, I just can't bring myself to buy one until they allow Sigma and Tamron to build more FF lenses for the mount.

I love my EOS R so much, zero reason to replace it. :)

I ponied up for a set of RF glass and I'm not disappointed with either the R5 or R5 Mark II. I did sell the R5 to partially defray my costs for the upgrade. The pre-capture, higher burst, better rolling shutter, and improved AF made it worth it. There are a couple of lenses that Sigma offers in EF (20mm F/1.8 for example) that I wish for. But I'm overall pretty happy.

It is interesting having only recently visiting Wales from Australia that I now recognise some of the scenes used!!!

People complain about capacities being 'the same' despite technological advancements, but I think Canon are smart to do this! We don't really need a 90mp camera, especially us wildlife photographers due to a number of reasons:

1. No matter how good your glass is, there's a limit to how much correction power they have;
2. Atmospheric distortions can become very apparent, a higher mp count won't fix that;
3. Sometimes, optimising the design can give some definition improvements, like the R5 Mark II apparently has compared to R5.

I do hope Canon gives us the sensor-shift capability in the R5 Mark II. I've only just ordered one, being my first Mirrorless camera (coming from a 250D and 6D Mark II) I am looking forward to it!

I love it having clog2, better autofocus, and no record limit (r5 should have had this). But for a photo first camera I wish they didn’t go for a stacked sensor. Has worse low light and dynamic range. It should be photo first hybrid since their r5c line is the video first hybrid.

They also removed certain features like the high resolution ibis 400 megapixel photos. Might be niche but I rather have more features than less. The photo/video switch could have been suomething else customizable perhaps. I like being able to quickly switch between photo and video with the quick touch of a customized button with my right shooting hand on the R5.

Would’ve loved to see them fix the edge wobble that happens when recording with wide angle lenses and sensor/electronic stabilization.
Last but not least, Canon’s prices are atrociously high and they don’t allow third party lenses. Each day i’m more tempted to leave their bodies.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I'm the R5 owner. The R5 is still a very very good camera. The R52 is not really impressive. I will still keep the R5 in my bag.

How quick is the transition time from photo to video? My favorite feature on the R5 is INSTANTLY switching photo to video using the M-fn button. Seeing that photo/video switch on the top of the R5 II is disappointing to me, but 8K60 & less rolling shutter makes me happy! Best reviewer ever, you ROCK Chris!!

It hurt watching you try to hit the buffer with the mechanical shutter 😅😅

Not sure if you mentioned this: the noise cleans up a good bit at ISO 4000 in CLOG 2 and 3.

Hello, I see all your videos; congratulations! According to you, what is the camera that has the best autofofus at the moment (without price limits...). Thank you if you answer me Roberto

This would be a great replacement for my 5DmkII. Unfortunately, this is little too expensive for a hobby, so I got R8 instead.

I played around with the R5ii and R1 ProFusion (photo and video tradeshow in Toronto, Canada). It's probably the only chance I would have to have one in my hand. That viewfinder is massive, compared to my R7. And that eye control AF is very trippy, which I was surprised to see working with me without calibration. I was researching what could filter down to a future R6iii and R7ii, both would be roughly within my budget range. But that battery going to 6P gives me pause.

I think I'll be waiting for a Mark 3. I have the Mark 1 almost from launch moving from 5D cameras and I had almost them all. 5D to R5 was huge, R5 1 to II... theres little advantage for what I do and instead the money went on some lenses and a badly needed computer upgrade. Lovely camera just not lovely enough to justify spending the money on when my R5 is still doing more than I need.

I love my original R5. It’s more than enough for what I do.
