Finally, a non YouTuber doing real life shit that’s giving unbiased opinion. This is so refreshing. Thank you.

I don't have a problem with it. Shot a 5 hour wedding just fine

Thanks for the feedback, I like hearing from other actual videographers vs YouTube reviewers, and the amount of time you put into this video is appreciated. I have the R5II and will start doing my own testing in the next couple of days. I was aware before getting the R5II that the 4K60 is line skipped which is disappointing but wasn't a dealbreaker for me. TBH I have the C70 and IMO it is softer than anything I get out of the R5 and probably softer than anything I will get out of the R5II as well.

It doesn't bother me because you can always add post sharpness. The C70 footage gets incredibly sharp with a touch of post sharpening as does the R5 and I am pretty sure the R5II will be the same way. With the 4K60 SRAW, it is straight off the sensor so no denoising or sharpening has been applied to it, if you post sharpen the SRAW it will actually get much sharper than the C70 or R8.

Post sharpening is a standard step in editing both photos and videos, as long as the footage was shot with a good codec, at a good data rate, and the subject matter was in focus, post sharpening can make the image as soft or as sharp as you want. The R8 probably looks better right out of camera because it is probably applying some sort of in camera sharpening and denoising; the fact it is oversampling vs line skipping definitely helps as well but probably not as much as you would think.

Congrats on getting the C400, I am eyeing it as well, but most of my work is run and gun hybrid photo/video work so the R5II was a better fit for me. If the C70 wasn't so good I would consider replacing it with the C400. Looking forward to your thoughts on the C400.

The Canon 4k 60 sweet spot is the R6II . I use it for all day weddings, no overheating, no line skipped readout, full frame, ibis, smaller package… might be worth considering alongside the C70

Also, maybe it’s a video publish date timing issue, but the new C80 seems to be similar to the C400

R5C Mark II is good for photos and short quick videos. Getting the C400 or C80 is a good choice for video.

I owned and shot probably 1200 GB every week since then. Here’s the short version. 4k60p line skipping a little better than the R5 mark 1. SRAW beautiful and sharp (not for everyone, he doesn’t understand raw clearly) cropped mode 4k60p very sharp oversampled from 5.1K I use it a lot actually. 4k120 looks identical to 60p. Not bad for social media, almost no one can’t tell the difference after YouTube compression. 8k best in business. Overheating it’s better than before but still there in long shots mostly.

Shooting more than four weddings, each lasting over 15 hours, using three EOS R5 II cameras without battery grips—recording in 4K 60p outdoors and 4K 25p indoors with Log 2—has been no problem. Occasionally, the screen shows a 10-level overheating indicator, but it rarely goes beyond 2 notches. I even recorded non-stop for 3 hours, and it never exceeded 2 notches. The quality is incredible, even when downscaled from 8K.

Do you have the ‘Shutdown Warning’ setting turned OFF?

Thanks bro I'm definitely buy a canon r6 ii for 4k 60fps 😅 or canon r5c

To just to let you know, I have the r5c which does over sample in all modes with zero overheating.
With the new battery in the r5c it greatly increases the run time of the canon r5c.
I got over an hour and a half run time on one lpe6p battery.
I know you already got this camera but if you can return it maybe try the r5c

You can shoot 4k RAW 60fps, this is really sharp.

The 4k SRAW on this thing also has a really weird funky noise pattern(with both vertical and horizontal short strip/lines) which cannot be removed AT ALL even with the strongest noise reduction settings in post.

ok so you helped me out big time. Was looking for a camera for stills but primarely video.

the answer is very simple, the R5II is a great camera for 12bit 8k60 raw and 10bit 8k30 & 4k30 fine because it uses ten ull sensor read out or supersampling. for me it's great to shoot 8k60 raw as in post I can do slow motions and can do digital paning and zooming in without loss of quality. all olther formates like 4k60, 4k120 and sraw a downsampled with line scipping / pixel binding which causes less details less sharpness an aliassing on contrasty lines. there is only one additional mode for 4k60 which gives you the full quality and this is the 4k60 cropped mode (S35 / aps-c) because then, the R5II supersamples the resulting 4k60 cropped image from the cropped appr 6k resolution. if you need a clean 4k60 or great 4k120 or the best low light camera, you should better use a 24MP cam like the R6II or R6 or for professional use the R3. thats the reason why I still have my R3 besite my new R5II, the R5II only for 8k60 raw and the R3 for low light conditions and 4k120

Great camera review, it almost made me return it however I’m not a big videographer. Actually what took me by surprise is that the battery grip with the fan does not have vertical shooting capabilities. I thought that this grip was the best overall choice. I’m glad your footage showed the rear of the camera as I haven’t found any out there showing the whole thing. I guess I’m just buying the non-fan grip to be able to have the necessary buttons when I shoot vertically. Thanks!

Hey there, saw a couple of your videos and got an R8 for a B camera for my C300 Mark lll. I did see the overheating initially but then I got the small rig vmount, plate and a Kondor blue usb c with the converter built in and turned on Airplane mode. Last weekend ran both cameras at an event Morning session was about close to 2 hours and the afternoon session was an hour and a half. R8 filmed 4K 24 the entire time without overheating. 4K 60 for b-roll last week in Florida heat and humidity didn’t overheat. I also shot both times in the smaller file format. Hope that helps thanks for the videos.

Here are my 2 cents about the R5 ii. They are a shit load of YouTube influencer telling everybody wow the R5 ii are the work horse bla bla. For the photography sure it is no doubt is a better and faster camera. For video, it is NOT the camera for video, like the R5C. The biggest problem I have about the R5 ii is overheating and pixel bin in 4K 60P. You are buying a $4300 with tax, which is about $4500 camera, and you get overheating is unacceptable to me. This is why I am buying a R5C instead of the R5 ii. R5 ii cooling grip is a mimick. Canon should have made thecR5 ii like R5C with built-in cooling fan and over sample video on ALL Mode. But somehow, Canon always finds a way to screw its customers.

Canon just announced C80 makes sense why they crippled R5 mark II

Honestly you could've looked that up before buying. I shoot mostly 4k60 with my R5C no problem, sounds like that would be the better camera for you.

To be fair most full frame cameras overheat when shooting 4k 60p. This is a feature unique to Canon unless its a full frame camera with a 1:1 4k resolution sensor like the Sony A7S III. This is why all other full frame cameras have to crop to APSC mode when shooting 4k 60.

The R5 is a unique camera that pushes the limits of full frame technology. Full frame can barely manage 4k and yet Canon has made 8k work. For those that want that level of detail its there. For those that rarely want or shoot slow motion the tradeoff is there to prefer fine detail and better quality options for recording formats like raw. The R5 is a borderline cinema camera and some sacrifices have to be made for other types of video production to be better optimized for more narrative types of production.

Its important to use the best tools for the job. I own a R6 and a R5. Owned the R6 first and yes its a better 60p camera. Its a better videography camera which is why I keep it. I feel like I have the best of both worlds at my disposal now. Great 60p from the R6 when the type of project makes more sense to go that route. Great 8k raw using c-log2 for a lot of color flexibility later.

The R5 is not a bad camera at all and in fact the mk2 is an absolutely amazing video camera. It depends on the types of video each person shoots which is why we have the choices out there.

Fun tip but much like other full frame cameras that shoot 4k 60p at APSC crop the R5 can do the same and it eliminates overheating. Since the sensor is 8k a APSC crop is still 5.1k oversampled to 4k video. The R5 can over sample when cropped since the sensor is reading out a lot less pixels. So it manages 4k 60 over sampled from 5.1k and looks great. Its a APSC crop but its the clean 4k 60p I think many were hoping for.

Over sampling takes processing cycles and the 8k sensor is already a ton of pixels to read from the sensor. The R5C can handle it due to a much larger fan and colling system built into the camera.

I will say that outside of the 4k 60p aspect the R5 is superior to the R6 in almost every other possible way. I rarely shoot slow motion or 60p real life video anymore so its not as much of a concern for me. If I do have to shoot a long form type project I either use the R6 or use the R5 in crop mode.

I do plan on getting the R5 Mk II primarily for photography and leave the videography to my DJI Osmo Pocket 3. I have been in dire need of replacing my old Sony Alpha A65.
