The fact he called his victim stupid is a whole different level of irony

Many of the details here are wrong, but the real story is even more bizarre. Paul Powell was a proud racist, and in 1999 he murdered the 16-year old because he found out she had a black boyfriend, and s-assaulted her 14-year old sister. The trial was in 2000, and he was found guilty of the murder (and got the death penalty) and the s assault of the 14-year old (he got 3 life sentences). But because the prosecution didn't meet Virginia's burden for the death penalty, the conviction was vacated by VA's supreme court. In VA, you can only get the death penalty for murder if there are aggravating circumstances (like s assault, robbery, etc).

He wrote the letter to the prosecutor in 2001, taunting them for their failure, calling them names and profanity, but detailing the crime with information that the prosecution didn't know...only the killer did. Powell thought he was safe because of double jeopardy. But since there was new evidence (from the letter) and the verdict vacated, they were able to get a second trial in 2003. Because he admitted he tried to s assault her but killed her when she resisted, they had the aggravating circumstance, and he was found guilty and given the death penalty.

He was executed in 2010. He refused lethal injection, and so was executed using the electric chair. I wouldn't exactly call 11 years 'instant karma', but he did snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and got what he deserved.

To borrow from the recent comments of an Australian judge
"Mr Powell, after escaping the lion's den, made the mistake of going back for his hat"

I know these girls. I grew up and went to school with the younger sister Kristie who survived and am still friends with her to this day. She's married with 3 beautiful children and doing very well.

That's exactly how the court system is supposed to work.

So sad for both sisters. So brave for the little sister to make sure they got justice. Having her sister still here would be better.

One of the quickest death sentences carried out in modern times

Bro imagine killing someone, being cocky about it, being sentenced to death, crying and balling, unsentenced, being cocky again, then resentenced to death

Unless the defendant himself chose not to appeal his sentence, he must have had a horrible attorney. You said he was executed just a few months after he was sentenced to death. The appeals process can be lengthy and it's usually years before someone is executed.

He forgot to save the game when he got a life sentence and accidentally triggered the bad ending.
