See, the $1000 PC has to be paid, all at once, up front. The $480 for 8 years of PSN or XBL is $60 yearly. So you're paying half as much, which is far easier to save.

EDIT, before someone says something about it: Yes, you COULD theoretically buy your PC over time by swapping parts, but that's going to severely limit what you can do early on.

But you can also just buy a $300 pre-built Dell, throw in some extra RAM, and get a $100 GPU that will allow you to play most games on High or better for about the same cost as the console. You just have to have the time and inclination.
