“The Mind’s Eye” is a new series from VICE in which we chronicle the creative process of a unique creator, artist, or craftsperson as they produce an original work. The result is a hybrid between a strangely-satisfying look into the technical processes of modern art, but also a portrait of the world’s leading creators, their lives, and their inspiration.

David Altmejd is a renowned avante garde sculpture artist who creates bizarre and captivating busts with all sorts of crazy materials - including his own hair. In the fourth episode of “The Mind’s Eye”, we’ll follow David as he brings one of his busts to life out of his Los Angeles workshop.

Honestly he's literally explaining why art school is valuable. It forces you out of your artistic comfort zone. I wish I could've afforded to go

I could watch this guy mess around with random things and just chat about why he likes them for hours. His voice is very relaxing and his enthusiasm is contagious.

I don't think I've heard another artist who better describes the process and aesthetics of creating art...at least the way I've experienced it. So much duality creating balance.

You don’t have to want it in your house to appreciate the creativity.

This is my favorite artist of the last 10 years. I seen that head with the hole in it filled with crystals and blew my mind. I thought it was a drawing not a sculpture.

He said “I made a portrait of my sister” and they showed a woman’s mangled face. 6:30

David's sculpture of his sister is eerily close to a drawing I made of "God" I saw while on shrooms. Head on a neck, but the face is just an infinite, diamond shaped void that looks like space

Umm I don't know if strangely satisfying is the right description.

"The kind of infinite aspect of the body" is a great way to look at ourselves.

This is very very good, almost perfectly artistic and he is moving very fast, even better as it shows he isnt thinking too much. Its very rare of functional adults to be able to see these things and have the discipline and material wealth to put them together.
