Nigeria Labour Congress President Ajaero's Release from DSS custody

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), after a day of detention. Ajaero was arrested on Monday morning been 9 september 2024 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, while on his way to the United Kingdom for an official engagement. He was released late Monday night on administrative bail, in what seems like a move to avoid a potential shutdown of the economy.

Your welcome to naija anchor news:
Today, we are discussing the implications of Ajaero's arrest and his release. The Nigeria Labour Congress had threatened to shut down the country's economy if Ajaero wasn't released before midnight on Monday. And it wasn't just the NLC - the Trade Union Congress and other affiliate unions were also on high alert, ready to take action. The National Union of Electricity Employees even threatened to shut down the power grid if Ajaero wasn't released.
Omoyele Sowore confirmed Ajaero's release on his official X account, saying "BREAKING: The fascist regime of @officialABAT has released the @NLCHeadquarters President Joe Ajaero from @OfficialDSSNG custody on bail." However, the NLC hasn't officially confirmed his release yet.

Ajaero's arrest drew widespread condemnation, with many calling for his immediate release. Dr Muda Yusuf, Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, warned that the arrest could worsen Nigeria's economic hardship. "The way forward is to dialogue... Both the security agency and the NLC should have an engagement. If there is any charge against Joe Ajaero, there are channels to go about it instead of creating uncertainty and suspicion."

But the NLC is warning that the DSS clampdown may spread to other areas, including the media. Benson Upah, NLC spokesperson, said "This arrest is not limited to the Nigeria Labour Congress... This clampdown will spread viral. It is an organized crime against the people of this country." And with the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office in Abuja also raided by DSS operatives on Monday, What do you think is going on, so now that he's been freed, what's next? Will the government and labour leaders be able to find common ground?

I'm extremely embarrassed at the way Nigeria is gradually sliding into an authoritarian government. The same style tyrannical Abacha government that Tinubu was acclaimed to have fought. So so embarrassing
