Unfairly underrated composer and performer, Ray Stevens' output will always hold an important place in my heart. *WELL DONE, RAY STEVENS!!*

I remember when this song hit the radio and I loved it immediately! Knowing that he didn't just write it but did all of the arrangements is mind-blowing ( pun intended)! Great song and great job, Mr Stevens!

Good song. And too true. My wife is what keeps me sane.

This is a good definition of a stand up man. "Stevens was married to Penny Jackson Ragsdale for over 60 years, until her death on December 31, 2021, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Two days prior, he had canceled his New Year's Eve concert at CabaRay, due to Penny's rapidly declining health. They had two daughters, Suzi and Timi, and four grandchildren"

Ray was known mainly for his novelty songs like "Ahab the Arab, " "Gitarzan" and "The Streak." But in the late '60s he released some really awesome songs that no one would ever mistake for "comedy" or "novelty" records, and yet, they were uniquely Ray Stevens. This was one of them. But my favorite was "Mr. Businessman." Both from about the same year, I believe. (1968)

Wow. I never realized this was Ray singing this song, as he normally does humorous songs.

This is a brilliant song. The contrast in tempos really states it well.
I missed Ray Stevens when he created the vast majority of his work. Early in his career, I was preparing myself for my professional life. I had to take the long way around for many reasons and then I was attacked by bacterial meningitis that caused two strokes. I did much good along the way and many are alive bc I practiced psychiatric medicine. Well before I knew it Ray was 70 yo and in semi retirement (went home to Nashville). In my forced retirement I discovered he put his YouTube channel up. I could not go to Branson when I was still practicing and he was performing although I lived 40 miles north in Springfield, Mo. I am thankful to him for allowing me to listen to his work bc am disabled and money is now even more tight. It is great Ray is still living (6 months younger than my spouse, who also is still living). Ray’s. Songs are decent and diverse. Some are hilarious others express my frustrations with my nation’s deteriorating, and yet other songs remind me of the social cycles of each generation. His body of work is a good reference for a retired Psychiatrist.

I used to LOVE this song when I was a young teen, daydreaming about my future. Wow, things turned out so different from those Dreams!

This is great proof that Ray could perform songs with a serious message. This and " Mr. Businessman " are both great hits !

I grew up with ray stevens funny songs being my favorite. I had no idea my grandparents knew him from this kind of material. I wish they were here to chat with about him. This is brilliant.

Not bad. Cleverly constructed. Like it. Only #52?

This was Ray's fifth single release on Monument Records and at the time was his highest charting non-comedic hit for those out there who'd like to know that kind of information. I'd always wondered who came up with the idea to have birds on the picture sleeves? There's other picture sleeves of Ray with birds, too, during this time period.
