Help Me Save Yankee Candle - How they overcome the problem of selling 'scent' over the Internet.

Yankee Candle isn't doing so well... With the slow death of retail, how do you stand out from competition when your main advantage is scent? You can't smell something over the Internet.

As a longtime fan of Yankee Candle, and with a lot of great memories tied to their product, I wanted to help them figure out how to get their groove back. This video is a pitch for a new product line that will help them bring back the "in store" experience to e-commerce customers.

However, it won't do any good if they don't see it. Help me get the attention of Yankee Candle so they see this video and take it seriously. Please share this on social media, tagging Yankee Candle. If you know someone who works there, please send it to them directly.

Just as importantly, let them know you WANT THIS PRODUCT. If enough people make a fuss about it, then they will know their market is demanding that they pay attention. Get your friends, family, and all fellow "candle sniffers" you know to get on board.

Here is a list of platforms and accounts you can target:

Loved this and the way you went about explaining everything!

As a former employee of the brand, I did want to point out that their employee wage structure and lack of internal leadership development for store managers will be the death of the brand at the end of the day. Internal issues are what is causing the brand not to do well the most; the consumer doesn't want to shop from an unhappy employee, stores don't open on time or as often when they cannot find people to work for the district leaders that have "burnt out" in my opinion/aren't here for the changes needed to be made to keep e-commerce alive post covid.

love the brand, will always love the brand = people don't quit places, they quit people

Hi Chris,
Where do you get these ideas? Even this simple video, as you call it, is fun and relaxing to watch. Could you please make more?

This is an impressive video! However, it's surprising that the Yankee team did not come up with this idea themselves. Their failure to adopt your strategy would be a significant oversight.

It's a recurring issue in many businesses: leadership lacks foresight, leading to the company's doom, despite receiving substantial compensation, resources, and time to execute a plan. I've witnessed this personally in several organizations. Despite presenting well-researched and actionable strategies for improvement - I needed power to do anything. This experience has led me through various emotional stages of anger, grief and acceptance - culminating in a nihilistic perspective where I now await an AI overlord to fix our society, or eradicate human's pitiful existence.

As a former employee of the Company are store continues to be open in the Rochester NY area but sadly there were two that got closed leaving consumers wanting. And good employees gone in my store we worked very hard no matter the time of year but when the holidays we ALL KICKED IT UP a number of notches. We all work together sales assoc with assistant n of coarse with the store manager. We may had been employees but we were a family. The changes after the founder Mike Kitridge sold the Company. Were unbelieveable threw the years. Changes n changes more stores more everything is to much. The store needs to go back to basics before its gone. Which will be a very sad day for me. 15:09

What a great video! Very entertaining plus you just make sense. Wish we had a Yankee Candle nearby, I want to try that mountain lodge. Agree with yellow for lemon. Banana just tastes wrong even in Jelly Bellies.

I'd be thrilled if Yankee Candle made a sampler! Great idea! @yankeecandle

The thing nobody knows about Yankee Candle is that they have an absurdly generous return policy, at least they did when I worked there. You can return any candle, in any state of being used - without a receipt - and get a brand new one of any scent you want. Yes, that means you can carry in multiple, empty jars and they have to let you shop around for free replacements. You can just go "I didn't really like the scent" or "it just wasn't that strong" if they ask, and the policy at the flagship store I worked in was to never ask.

Just discussing this this very morning. They should do fried onion.

Some additional ideas:
variety packs should ship free and maybe even offer 2-day shipping to lower the barrier to entry.
The first pack and maybe one more every year should be free (i.e. at-cost to YC) to further lower the barrier to entry.
Heavily market this offer.

Partner with Crayola to mimic the Silly Scents line, licensed by Yankee Candle, release new seasonal packs, maybe have a new thing that people don’t have to burn? Candle sniffing on the go.

Newell would have to place nice with Hallmark.

Better hurry before Bath&Body Works figures it out.

I live in Massachusetts, was a huge Yankee candle fan for many years myself and sister inlaw, would literally buy them buy the tray ! I heard the first go around they were being made with lead wicks …. Never really investigated it but I heard it a few times, husband said nope not interested in having them burn in our home anymore…. So a month or two after that I started buying them again and was noticing that they were no where as strong scented as before …. I have spent money hand over fist trying the different scents and also old favs and they are no way the Yankee candle I loved and enjoyed anymore! Please find out why they no longer smell as strong as they use to and if they are infact being made with lead wicks ! I also heard they sold to wood wicks ????

My girlfriend loves candles and I don't know the first thing about candles so for me this is a perfect idea.
Also, I hate candles, but I love my girlfriend... And it's amazing the amount of that I'll put up with for her. 😅

Go back to big labels and cool names for the candle as it's an experience...

yankee is gone. gone. it was the be all, end all of candles back in the 70s and 80s. When Mike Sr. sold it to big business, the quality went down. The once glorious scent was replaced with cheaper oils, which meant more profits. bottom line for big business. Along with the beautiful unique accessories came cheap 5th grade straw projects. blah! thank goodness Mike's son picked up where his dad left off and takes pride in his candles today. No thanks. I have old accessories I cherish because they hold a lot of nostalgia for me. When Rubbermaid Newell buys a candle business, when they are sold in discount chains, I'm outta there.

I'm sure it doesn't help their business when people become educated about all the harmful synthetic toxic ingredients in Yankee Candles.
