Astrophysicists Explore The Latest in Exoplanet Discovery

How do we uncover distant planets’ secrets? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore the recent discoveries in exoplanet study, exo-moons, and finding the stars from our sun’s stellar nursery with astronomer and head of Cool Worlds Lab, David Kipping.

Learn about "Cool Worlds"– planets that exist in the colder, outer regions of space. The discussion dives into the science of exoplanets, exo-rings, and the enigmatic exo-Trojans, revealing how these distant worlds differ from our own solar system.

Taking insights from the James Webb Space Telescope, we explore Kepler-167e, a Jupiter twin, and its potential for exomoon discovery. We explore the birth of our solar system, the search for the Sun's lost siblings, and the idea of rogue worlds– planets that wander the galaxy, untethered from any star.

We expand to include rapidly spinning stars, the process of aging them through gyrochronology, and the groundbreaking discoveries of JWST, such as binary Jupiter-mass objects. Plus, we cover plans for the Habitable Worlds Observatory, a next-generation telescope aimed at directly imaging the surface of exoplanets and potentially finding signs of life.

Dr Tyson and Dr Kipping collab? AWESOME! Now we just need PBS Spacetime's Dr o'Dowd to also be present and we'll have the "holy trinity" of YouTube astrophysics and cosmology in one room.

Chuck has left comedy & became a scientist and Neil is now the guest comedian. I can't disagree. Neil is a comedic genius. 👍

What unique observational techniques might the Habitable Worlds Observatory employ to directly image exoplanet surfaces and differentiate between abiotic and biotic signals?

I’m always glad to see Chuck sitting there! I almost wanna click off the movie when he’s not! He adds that sense of humor, otherwise it’s always so serious feeling! Go Chuck!

Dr. Kipping is one of my favorite YouTube narrators out there. I LOVE his Cool Worlds videos. And, not in an offensive way, he puts me to sleep with his videos. I usually need to watch his videos 2 or 3 times, giving him those extra views, to catch it all as I usually fall asleep during them. But, nit in a boring way. His voice is just so damn soothing it puts me to sleep!

Another great episode Neil and Lord Nice!

I really love the chemistry between Neil and Chuck. You have to be really attuned to get those reactions and ask the guest to explain, which actually helps us, the audience, a lot too. :)
