If you want to algebraically derive the general equation of an ellipse but don't quite think your students can handle it, here's a derivation using numbers that is 20% easier than the full derivation.

Okay....as soon as I saw your hair I accepted all you say is true.

Thanks for the derivation! That's what I love about math!
Teach me the general and let me deal with the cases! Unfortunately, we are taught to deal with the cases so whenever
we see a slightly different case we are stuck.

Keep going! I hope you can arrange your explanations in playlists!

Where does the 20 come from in 10:28, why isnt it just 100-(4x)^2+y^2?

This is exactly the explination I was looking for very well done . Thatn you so much...

Great video! Very intuitive explanation, much easier to understand than my own mental gymnastics (I was visualizing a non-perpendicular section of a cone, and trying to work out how the radius of the section would be deformed from the radius of a perpendicular section taken at the same height, based on how much the intersecting plane would be rotated/tilted... ugh, lol)

Dear sir,
I am Victor and I am from india.
Could you please explain why focus semimajor axis defination of eccentricity is analogous with focus diretrix method??? Why the ratio of distance from focus to any point on ellipse and distance from diretrix to that point on ellipse is eccentricity itself in the case of an ellipse ?? How it us correlated focus semimajor axis method

Is there any way of getting a measurement between point P and E? If the semi major is 5 and the semi minor is 3 as in your illustration?
