109 - Wave Interference

In this video Paul Andersen explains how waves interact with objects and with other waves. When a wave hits a fixed object it will be reflected and inverted. When a wave hits a free object it will be reflected without being inverted. Waves pass through other waves but can show either constructive or destructive interference. Traveling waves confined to a boundary will creating standing waves through interference.

I have scoured YouTube for hours trying to find this exact explanation to understand how resonance works, I couldn’t understand why and how the waves would return. This was explained in a way that I could easily understand and now it all makes sense! I’ve never taken physics in my life, I just wanted to understand the concept. Waves are super cool!

The use of the flow chart is super helpful and organized. It really puts everything into perspective. Thanks Mr. Anderson!

Should really have watched this in high school. Now I'm in college studying optics. It took me years to figure out how standing waves work. This video explained it to me clearly in minutes. Thanks a lot, Mr. Anderson.

was so clear! when the waves subtract and add, also the free end and the fixed end.

Thank you so much!! Your videos are amazing and so helpful. I can't imagine where I would be w/ my science studies without you, Mr Anderson!!!!

Thank you so much again! Keep up the great videos

How it is destructive I saw in the animation that they bounce back so it is not actually nullifing the effect

Can someone please help me? Why does anti reflection coating of lenses have to be a quarter of the wavelength of light, if both of the reflected waves (from the first surface and the second surface) will undergo 180 degree phase change? Won't they interfere constructively in any way, despite the thickness of the coating, since the reflected rays will be exactly the same as the incident wave, except they BOTH will be 'flipped upside down', having the same phase (no phase change between the two reflected waves)? Both of the reflected waves should undergo 180 degree phase change and therefore, interfere constructively.
