Paul Jones. What a Great singer and personality . And what a voice. Now 80 years old. I remember do i Diddy Diddy.. i was 7 years old 1964 when it hit The world.

This is the song and the version that first got me into Dylan. My teacher played it in assembly when I was 12 - quite subversive of him for a Christian school. I thought the lyrics were fantastic. 42 years later, my opinion has not changed.

In the mid-60s, the top TV music show was ITV's "Ready Steady Go" early on Friday evenings. It was the only one to feature truly live performances (no lip-synching or backing tracks), and the bands played right there on the studio floor, almost surrounded by an audience carefully chosen for their appearance and dance skills.

One night, in the middle of all the go-go-go, Manfred Mann performed this number, which the BBC had banned as too controversial. Paul Jones' impassioned vocal was received with rapturous applause. And it's said to have been the only occasion on RSG when the entire audience stopped dancing completely, and paid full attention to the performance.
