Sorry to add my comments, after the session...
re: PC
I was led to believe it was name after Prontor-Compur, the German leaf-shutter manufacturer
The popular explanation is Poor Contact
For that reason Nikon added a screw fitting (starting with the last iteration of the NIkon F)
Re: BC and cables
As far as I know one does not need a cable when mounting it on a camera like F/F2
re: why no ISO hot shoe on some early Nikons ?
My take: On the Nikon F and F2, the interchangeble finder was not considered strong enough to mount a flash on the finder, hence the alternative flash-sloe over the rewind-assembly.
re: SB-800
As far as I know it has the widest compatibility of any Nikon flash, one could use it (with some limitations) from the Nikon F to D6
(that is a spread of over fifty years)
I agree the ergonomics are horrible, but the small size, compatibility and moderate secondhand cost make it attractive.

On the Nikon F and F2 there are contacts for triggering a flash above the rewind knob. The Nikon BC flash unit had corresponding contacts built in to mate with those contacts. Nikon also made a hot shoe that slid over those contact allowing other flash units such as the Vivitar 283 to be used without a pc cord.

The designation BC for the early flash units such as the BC-7 shown mounted on the Nikon F today stands for Battery Capacitor (the battery for the firing voltage and the capacitor for firing)

Pc means Prontor/Compur which is an old leaf shutter made by Alfred Gauthier many moons ago.

I killed my top of the line Sony flash (HVL-F60M) after 2-3 years of heavy once per month use. One night it made a clunk sound and that was it for the flash. That was the only flash that failed on me :(

Company as good as Nikon is should make their flashes powered by Li-Ion batteries and definitely up to today's standard remote flash controller like Godox and others. Current situation is, to me, pathetic. And I am a Nikon user. :-)
