Testing Home Smoke Alarms with Smoke!

Testing your household smoke alarms with canned smoke is never a bad idea. After recently upgrading the entire smoke alarm system in this home I decided it would be best to give each alarm a realistic test to ensure the sensor, alarm, and interconnecting features all work properly. As you can see in the video, each alarm passed the test!

I love testing fire alarms but I HATE testing smoke alarms since hearing protection will be required for testing those kind of alarms.

Thank god you replaced the kidde smoke alarms with first alerts. Kidde is known to be very unreliable and cheap, fatal in a fire. Also are know to false alarm way too often or stop working fast and also break super easily. That alone kidde has had more recalls then any other brand. My cousin electrician installed kiddes in his home and almost immediately started having problems like I said. ALSO… the battery died and the smoke alarm never even chirped. He sued kidde that very next day do to the fact he had 1 kid and a baby. I would never put kidde in my home and neither should you, EXACTLY if you have children!

I can test mine easily apparently with opening Clash of Clans. That happened the first time that happened.
Like it was legit on cue.
I open Clash of Clans, and the smoke alarms be like “BONK, BONK, BONK!”

This is definitely a more practical way of testing smoke detectors. However, I do wonder if it ruins the sensor over time because if you test them like this monthly over their 10-year life span, they're being exposed to smoke almost 150 times.

My house is almost 30 years
Old and it has old BRK 4120B’s in all of the rooms. I’m assuming they’re rare because I can only find 3 pictures of them on google. When we move I’m gonna bring one of them with us lol

My house is almost 10 years old and my smoke / CO detectors would occasionally beep at night. They didn't have a battery backup so I replaced them with the same detectors that you just installed. Recently, we had somethng burn, no flames, just a lot of smoke, in our microwave and the detectors did not sound. I want to do a smoke test of each of them to have some peace of mind that they are working properly. Rather than use canned smoke, it is not readily available and is $20 to $30 CDN per can, I am just thinking that the smoke from a lit cigarette should be sufficient to cause them to sound. I don't have any confidence that the test button is a proper test of a smoke alarm. Thank you for this video.

I agree. Same with fire alarm systems. Most key switches or test buttons only test the zone or SLC. Not the detector or pull station.

Do all the smoke alarms have to be the same model to be interconnected? Also great video

a few months ago, my smoke alarm/carbon dioxide detector went off as there was co in the air. the fire fighters that came said that it's best to replace the unit after it is activated as it's more prone to false alarms after that. is that true? we did replace them as recommended but i just wanted your take on it as you test your units and all that. the system doesn't know the difference i imagine so i'm not sure if it's true about if your detector goes off that you should replace it or not. thanks.

I did this same thing with the smoke alarms in my house with a yellow smoke can exactly like yours did and I found that two of the FireX i4618 series didn’t work and they would only go off if I pressed the test button. But most of them did work when I sprayed the smoke at them. Thanks to me watching your videos of when you do this I was able to find issues that you wouldn’t find with using the test button
