Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 US election race, meaning Republican candidate Donald Trump will be facing off against a new Democratic candidate.

While Mr Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement, there’s been a lot of speculation in recent months about former first lady Michelle Obama being a potential candidate in the US politics showdown.

Mrs Obama is enormously popular, and in a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll was the only hypothetical Democratic candidate who was deemed able to defeat Mr Trump in November. She also has a unique insight into the White House based on her two terms as First Lady in the Obama administration, and is one of the most high-profile former First Ladies in existence. In political commentary, she has frequently been raised as a possible “wildcard” for the Democrats.
