As a retired Army Infantry Senior NCO, when you’re doing a ruck march with ruck, IOTV, helmet and weapon, it’s important to use the weapon as part of your stride rhythm and take longer strides. Discipline your respiratory cycle along with each step, for instance; left, right, inhale then left, right, exhale and keep it at a rhythm that you can endure for the 12 or 24 mile. Our minimum road March speed was 4 miles per hour minimum but we’d usually do five per hour. Load the heaviest items on your rucksack packing list as high and close to your upper shoulders as possible, only put bulkier and soft items towards the bottom. After an hour the sweat on your back will be intense and may start to bother you so to help this, tighten the waist/kidney belt then carefully loosen both shoulder straps and allow the ruck to pivot away from your shoulders so air can get onto your back and allow it to cool. While doing this you’ll need to pitch your upper body forward a little to offset the balance shift. After 2-4 minutes of this, reverse the process and continue. This cooling method may slow you down a little so if you can, push your speed up a little to allow a couple minutes of slower marching speed so in the end, it balances out your average speed/time. And don’t rely on issue socks and boots for long road marches, get quality boots and high quality wool socks, every ounce of weight on you will add up, boots included. The less weight the boot is, the faster it’ll move and requires a lot less effort. To train for speed marching like in this video, wear ankle weights and walk your ass off going up a gentle incline. Running in a road March does a lot of damage to the body and it will affect you later on if you’re not conditioned for slow ruck runs/fast walking. We only do running towards the end of the March if we know we have enough energy for the boost run. As you march, clear your mind and let it wander on ideas or good memories because if you’re focused on your performance you’ll start thinking about every part of your body that’s causing your inability to hold the pace, once in a while just glance at people in front of you and your body will do the rest to speed up. Just keep pushing yourself but don’t walk if your ankle or feet are damaged somehow, it’ll make things worse for recovery.

Keep with the herd for the first half. Then you pick a spot and intermittently speed walk/jog for short distances. That is how I was always able to come in at 2:30 on the 12mi ruck March and didn’t blast myself. Your legs are sore, but you’re also not totally gassed for the rest of the day or when they inevitably have you PT the next day.

There’s no technique that will make the pain go away, it will hurt, you just have to endure it

That third point is critical. I did a ruck yesterday and my feet/shins were absolutely wrecked from straight legging it.

If i keep both feet on the ground it means im standing still which is my kind of ruck, no walking required 😂

I’ll say with these techniques everyone is different build wise, ultimately do what works best for you, I find a airborne shuffle helps keep me in a competitive pace for long distance but shorter faster turnover for cadence is effective

This is right. I learned the hard way and injured my knee. I was a 5'2" Marine and had been told to increase my stride length. My knees locked out and a knee injury took me out for 2+ months.

I like doing long strides with maximum bend. Full strides while cushioning each step. Then you switch between quick strides and long strides so your using diffrent muscles. Then you can keep your muscles more ready for contact.

I just did the light pole method. Run a pole, walk a pole. The rest is just walking.
