Kentucky had not had a fatal distillery accident since Prohibition until the morning of April 24, 2015, when the still at the Silver Trail (LBL) Distillery suddenly over-pressurized and exploded. Distillers Jay Rogers and Kyle Rogers were hit with a blast of steam followed by burning alcohol, and both men suffered severe burns. Kyle Rogers died 17 days later at Nashville's Vanderbilt University Medical Center, while Jay Rogers spent more than two months in the burn unit before he was released. He and Silver Trail founder Spencer Balentine share their stories of survival, the generosity of Kentucky's whiskey community, their future plans, and pay tribute to Kyle Rogers in this episode of WhiskyCast HD.

Spencer is alright.. he is a true moonshiner to the root. What happened that day is freak, . I don't blame the still makers at all, I don't blame Spencer either. Steam is one dangerous motherffeerr! Copper mesh instead of marbles would have prevented this, but, .many distillers love them.. this is a tragic accident.. I hope LBL and Spencer do well in the future.as well for the still builder and all The families that were effected by this.

The only way this design of still could have become blocked is if the operator had either packed the column or if they distilled on the grain and it's been run too hot and too fast and the grain has built up in the column - or a combination of both. Either way - it is NOT the responsibility of the still maker - it's the operator's miss-management of the still.
