God, Roberta’s story is so much more common than folks realize these days. It scares the lavish right out of me and instills the frugal into my soul.

My bride and I both have pensions from govt. work. We don't have any control over the investments, just enjoy the money coming in. They're not huge, but they're additional income streams that add up. The good thing with pensions is they can act as a "guaranteed" income investment, which is why our other investments are 100% are in equities.

If someone should ever criticize me for owing KO, PEP or MO I’d simply ask them “ are you going to maintain me ?”

My employer still offers a pension. I didn't believe it at first because I thought pensions had gone the way of the dinosaurs!

Invest Non-Stupidly - I'm going to use that one.. :)

Worked for a company that had a pension plan. I decided to move it into a Rollover IRA. I actually did really well with it, bought Visa in 2010 with the $'s and never looked back.

My wife is entitled to a define benefit pension, I’ve always told her for our future we are planning it returning $0. (She doesn’t have to contribute anything for this pension).

But anywho, like I told her, if we get any of her pension in the future, it will be extra, but we are figuring 0. Too many people put their entire retirement in the hands of others (like people who heavily rely on social security to retire..)

Or people who never look at their retirements and what at the current contributions it will end up at. Scared to look. But what people don’t understand is because you don’t plan, doesn’t mean everything will work out in the future.

When I took early retirement from the Federal Reserve at 51 my pension was not as much if I had waited until i was 55 or 60 but it is still decent I get paid $2, 987 every month ($2, 512 after taxes). I took what is called level income so when I start to receive social security at 62 my pension will be reduced somewhat. 100% agree what I love about my dividend stocks is getting those increases every year. I view them like receiving a merit increase i use to get when I was still employed.

Hi, here in the UK very few jobs have good pensions, nowadays its all Self Invested Personal Pensions, you have your own pot and the company puts in 5% ish of your salary and you do the same, you can increase it and so will the employer to a limit 10%. I’m now at 31% and not missing paying all that tax and NI.
Good news is it’s your pot and it’s part of your estate when it all ends.
Take care all M.

As a fellow GenX'er, I was also able to grab a couple of years of pension from a large company before they cancelled the plan. It won't be very large, but it would be useful. I'm certain every little bit counts in retirement. I do often forget about it when planning. Subconsciously, I've seen several people reduced on their Big 3 pensions, so I'm suspicious that my pension will all be there when I want it.
I feel somewhat the same way about social security. I have the most control over my retirement and investing accounts, so that's where the bulk of my focus and planning is spent.
Appreciate you and your work on this channel. Looking forward to whatever is next.
Cheers!

Love this video. Definitely gives me piece of mind knowing that I’m on the right track. 29 years old, have a Defined Contribution Plan through my union, SSI (not relying on being able to collect that), and an ever growing dividend portfolio

It’s crazy how we sent all that money overseas instead of Detroit.

Great video! I admire your ability to accrue over a million in dividend paying securities. I receive a military and OPM pension amount of net $4, 925.00 monthly. I also own 4 houses in the midwest and rent them under market[don't want to burden my people] for about $3, 250..i should get $4, 500. Two of the four rentals are lien free and i should have the third paid off in a couple of months. I am 66 and a half and am waiting to collect social security at 70 which I estimate will be $3, 800-$4, 000, without COLA's. I only have just under 50k in dividend securities...i call it my beggar fund.

This is a really good video! Not just the dividend investing ( semi-retired at 54) but how people are ending up broke....even with "pensions"
This was definitely well researched.

The main reason for me to buy dividend stocks for stupid as it seems is that motivates me to keep going when I see my dividend income increasing every year. Not the best strategy perhaps, but what works for me.

Exactly start investing no matter how small, adding more as finances allow. Even iust starting with broad market etfs.

Yep, bird in the hand. I was in a similar situation as yours.. took early lump sum and invested in a combination of income-producing investments, that are being reinvested until I actually do retire. The reality is a pension isn't really an asset. It typically pays as long as you live, and will stop when you do. And that's assuming the pension "lives" that long too!
