The Trump administration on August 7, 2020 imposed economic sanctions on 11 current and former Chinese officials, including Hong Kong’s chief executive, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, marking a drastic escalation in tensions with Beijing over its imposition of a national security law in the semi-autonomous city.

This reminds me of Russia in the past. Once their economy were far behind the US, all the officials in Russia werent considered a spy or an evil anymore。

Please read Hong Kong Basic Law, Chapter II - Relationship between the Central Authorities and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Article 18:

'In the event that the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress decides to declare a state of war or, by reason of turmoil within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region which endangers national unity or security and is beyond the control of the government of the Region, decides that the Region is in a state of emergency, the Central People's Government may issue an order applying the relevant national laws in the Region.'

6 months of rioting rampage last year definitely qualifies as 'turmoil within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region which endangers national unity or security and is beyond the control of the government of the Region'. Article 18 clearly grants authority to the Central Government to intervene and restore the peace in a catastrophic situation of prolonged destruction and chaos by passing the National Security Law, because the HKSAR government has failed to bring the rioting rampage under control.

Why can't the United States stop acting like a selfish child and work together with other countries?

If none of these officials hide money overseas they don’t have anything to worry about, sanctions won’t affect them.... unless they have.

And while they are at it, the US should also sanction the Police Commissioners and Chiefs of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc for there acts of police brutality.

So many sanctions claimed by US day by day. I am insensitive for these kind of measures.

ok,so basically the US just helped China to make HK governers more loyal to mainland China and made HK more economically dependent on mainland thus to further reduce the possibility of HK independence, great job.
