The old one may not have done good, but damn I love the good old wob wob exhaust note.

Great to see the difference in traction levels. Although I miss the sound of those older models.

When stuck with opened diffs, apply light/moderate pressure on the brakes to transfer torque to the spinning wheel.

What is interesting/worth noting is that the rear diff on your chosen Old Subaru will make a bit of a difference, I believe older XTs got limited slip rear diffs, as well as WRXs and STIs. Still, a Foz XT vs a current base Foz isn't neccesarily fair, and as someone said, testing driving techniques like holding the brakes is also not the point

I still seriously prefer the square back of the old one. I hope the Ford bronco will reinvigorate bringing back Square backs!

Thanks for the test. As I suggested in another video, I think many will find interest for old XV vs. new XV with X-mode. As an owner of 2018 model I know X-mode is not a gimmick, but this test will prove it for sure. Both cars will pass all tests but new one should be with much less wheel spin.

The automatic transmissions Subaru used (4EAT/5EAT) lock the power split 50/50 when the lever is put in 1 position. Thought it may be helpful next time you test an older Subie :3

1998 s modle foresters didn't have an LSD rear diff in 1999 and newer S modle came equipped with LSD in the rear differential i bet the out come would have been diffrent if it has LSD

SG models that produced from 2002 to 2007 had LSD differentials, that solved issues like this. New forester and whole subaru line don't have LSD's. They immitate LSD effect with brake pads, which is quote effective

Its all about technique and skill...

You could "crab" that old forester with open diffs out of that situation by using your left foot to brake.

Essentially achieving a similar scenario to the new forester which is braking automatically to send power to the grounded tyres.

I have a 99 s model and it has read POS but noticed a strange lack power delivery to the rear. I haven’t tried putting it into 1 but in a snow or ice parking lot the rears did nothing in D at low speed. And only seem to get rear power above 30 kph

Hi,
This video shows how the AWD and 4x4 systems were developed in the last 20 years. In the last 10 years there are many SUVs which performs much better than the old generation Forester; and those SUVs are mostly FWD with reactive 4x4 systems.

If you'd ever come to France, I would love to submit my 2008 Impreza 1.5i with high/low range manual transmission :)

Subarus just prove that they get better and better over the years

hmmm, would there be a difference between the automatic forester SF and the manual 5 speed forester SF?

I’m shocked that the lil’ subie couldn’t push off the right side wheel test. But as mentioned in another comment, if it had the rear LSD it should be golden.

I have seen the old Forester outperforming hard core 4×4 in dune climbing.

The older forester wasn't applying the brakes on either of the wheels without traction. Newer subarus have a much more intelligent stability control that they call Vehicle Dynamics Control. In this simple case it will use the ABS to apply the brakes to the correct wheels to transfer power to the other side and free the vehicle from the rollers.

What’s the whirring sound from when the old one loses grip
