Isuzu D-Max 2024 review: 4x2 SX 1.9L | Toyota HiLux Workmate rival put to long-term tradie test!

The 2024 Isuzu D-Max is one of the hottest utes on the Australian market today, winning over plenty of buyers, so much so that it's third only to the market-leading Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger when it comes to segment sales. Needless to say, it's doing big numbers.

So, what is all the fuss about? Well, the answer is partly the D-Max's fuss-free approach to tradie-focused motoring. But does that mean it's actually good? Well, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Mark Oastler has spent three months living with its SX Crew Cab Chassis High Ride variant to find out.

Specifically, he's been piloting the 1.9-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which should prove very interesting in the face of the D-Max's well-loved 3.0-litre unit. Either way, there's plenty to unpack here, from pricing and features to practicality and safety. Buckle up!

All reviews these days are focused on high end models.
Good to see a cost saving review👍

Terrific review. The overall fuel consumption of 9.6 L/100kms appears to be very good considering the variety of driving that was undertaken, which included city driving, caravanning, and having a payload on the tray.
I came to this review to see if the 1.9 litre diesel is a reasonable proposition over the 3.0 litre diesel, and see if there are overall savings to be made regarding ownership. Based on this review, for the type of driving that I would do, the 1.9 diesel appears to be a reasonable alternative. Currently Isuzu Australia has a promotional drive-away price for the MY24 manual 1.9 diesel 4x2 single cab chassis at $32, 490 drive-away, whilst the manual 3.0 litre diesel is $37, 490 drive-away (as quoted from a dealership I saw yesterday, 27/3/24, but the Isuzu website shows $41, 792 drive-away, and another Isuzu dealership I saw quoted the website prices).

Good to see on screen Mark. Your varied motoring background will bring value.
However, towing 2400kg, let alone the rated 3000kg, is a big ask from 110 / 350.
My older Prado is 140 / 340 (and not rated for that weight) and I wouldn't try towing that van.

if the 1.9L can survive 400ks of hard labour like the mahindra 2. 2L then its a success.

How could you say your fuel figure of 9.6 L/100 compares favourably with Isuzus claimed figure of 7L/100 K. ??🤔
