I think this is where the windlass long bladed hewing spear got its design from, an interpretation of this pole arm, designed by... Oakshott or Peter Johnson maybe? I don't remember off hand, anyway tho, it isn't based on any historical art or examples either, but it's a neat looking pole arm for sure

Vikings just got early access to everything didn’t they. Must of been patreon supports so they got to alpha test all the weapon and sailing updates

To be fair, polearm types branch endlessly. Killy-thing-on-a-stick is a tried and true formula for a good weapon.

To be fair, a lot of weapons are different ratios of wood and metal. So there's probably thousands of weapon designs that were used we don't have samples of. Like just look a the pure amount of polearms we have and try to exactly classify them all, we have so many different ones that we can create a clear spectrum of spear, to pike, halberd, back to spear.

"It was described as a halberd"
You're telling me that somebody couldn't have figured out a fucking axe spear A lot earlier than the rest of the world?

Oh, I think I've read that Saga! In Njal's Saga, Gunnar acquired a magic Halberd that made him invincible! That must be a translation of the Atgeir! Gunnar fought its previous owner (a pirate I believe) on his boat, and finally won when the Atgeir got stuck in the boom and the pirate was forced to let go, which feels like something that would happen in a modern story.

Yeah, I'm gonna need to see a picture of these weapons.

Idk why but as you were explaining I was completely expecting to see a picture of the weapon, took me 3 watches to realize

Only the most effective or renowned weapons survived the test of time.

It’s an axe but where the thing has the hole that connects to the stick it has a metal point.

I like to think that the atgeirr is a battle axe with a long handle, as long as a spear and have a spear tip at the end where the axe head would be.

It was probably a Glave like weapon or a sword spear type.

The Atgeirr was actually a giant spoon, that's what made it so mysterious.

That weird Irish spear that you threw with your foot tho

I mean I know everyone else is already saying this but wouldn’t it be cool to see the halberd actually come from viking weaponry?

I mean a Halberd isn't exactly rocket science. A culture who's known for primarily using spears and axes as weapons deciding to combine them seems pretty reasonable to me. Since we have so little evidence for it, that probably means it was rare. But one blacksmith who decided to combine a Dane axe and spear seems pretty simple.

"Halberts weren't created until centuries later" and what if it was a Halbert and they just called it something else?

YatzeeWillWearAGreenHat

I mean, no it’s pretty much just a halberd. If they say it’s like a halberd then it probably looked like one.

Greek fire is a great example of a lost weapon; recipe was a close secret of the Eastern Romans until the fall of Constantinople, the Arabs tried replicating it to little effect.

This is why we must invent time travel
