That Domhnall Gleeson is so hot right now.

Also, for my American brethren:
Domhnall = "donal" like "tonal". The m is there to confuse Americans.
Saoirse = "shur-shuh" like "inertia".

Update: No one who signed up for my Oscar Pool beat my 18/24. Better luck next year, losers.

Definitely agree, had such an awesome time watching this movie, what I found astounding was how predictable it was, yet how goddamned happy I was about every decision made. But you're right this movie rides the backs of its characters and every single one was amazingly lovable, even the one that wasn't was very interesting. I made a joke to my friend that the boy that played Tony's brother deserved a lifetime achievement award and he had about 5 minutes of screen time at best[?] Definitely one of if not the most enjoyable films of last year. A top 10 movie of 2015 for sure (at least in my list haha)

I feel the exact same way about this movie. I shouldn't love this film, but i do. Ppl tend to think it's lightweight fare, but watching Ellis grow and seeing the entire scope of her transformation when faced with her former boss late in the film was much more gratifying than i though it'd be. The ending where she basically becomes for someone else what the lady in red was for her was amazing in showing how far she's grown. AND THE ENDING WAS PERFECT. I know, but don't know why i love this movie so much, but thank you for this video, so i can show to anyone who doesn't understand why this movie is so good and resonates so much. THANKS AGAIN.

Domnall Gleeson is the new Paul Bettany, in so much that he's often so good in a supporting/smaller role that he outshines the main lead

I was moved to tears a number of times during Brooklyn and marvelled at the performances. I found myself wishing Julie Walters had been nominated as well. Not everyone in the movie is nice to one another. The antagonist is the gossip mongering shop keeper who reminds Eilis about the small mindedness of the community and causes her to make her decision.

My current favorite nominee (albeit I'm seeing Room tomorrow). Right there with you about having a smile on my face for most of the movie.

I do agree about that the immigrant story resonates with a lot of people. I initially decided to see this movie because my grandparents immigrated to NY from Ireland in the early 1950s. However, despite the cultural and time-period specific details, I found myself personally identifying with Eilis' story far more than I expected thanks to a recent-ish move for a job. Discovering your own agency in shaping your life is something a lot of people (especially 20-somethings like Eilis) can identify with.

I know deep down that Brie was better in Room, but the one female performance I'll remember and that'll make me cry just to think of it in 2015 was Saoirse's.

not better than the revenant or the big short. definitely not better than ex machina, the hateful eight, and sicario. Another period piece about a love triangle yeah so great
