Ma Kali is very dear to me and in making offerings to Her- humbly and with love, a wonderful connection is made bit by bit until Her presence is felt on every level of my being. In this video I show how I make these offerings and explain their significance, while discussing the Divine Mother.

That cotton ball on the lotus stem actually makes the flower last quite a long time… I had bought 9 lotuses the day before Navaratri started and they lasted all 9 days (offering one each day)

Significance of offerings (upacharas)

By making these offerings we are asking the divine that we may be able to gain control over our 5 senses whoch are pointed outwardly and help us turn our senses inward
so that we may realize that Supreme Being that resides in our own hearts.

Offerings can be 5, 16 or 64 (depending on how much time you can spend)

Basic offerings - 5 in the following order

Gandham - Sandalwood paste - skin
Pushpam - Flowers - Ears - bees attracted to flowers make buzzing sounds
Dhoopam - Incense stick - represents our sense of smell
Deepam - Lamp - Offering or lighting deepam signifies light or eyes in sensory organs.
Naivedyam - Food - offering fruits or sweets or food item de notes our sense of taste

The whole universe if made of primary 5 elements, each upachara represents one element:
Vayu:- Offer a incense (Dhoop)
Agni:- Offer Lamp (Diya)
Prithvi:_ Offer Sandal Paste (Chandan)
Akash:- Offer Fresh Flowers (Puspa)
Jala:- Offer Naivedyam (Edible Item)

16 upacharas - God has 16 divine qualities or Kalas.
and by offfering the 16 upacharas (offerings) we pray to the divine so we may attain those qualities

Awesome, you got jasmine flowers, you got those from Vivek flowers? One thing I would like to mention, the flowers we offer to the deity we are not supposed to smell before offering, after offering and the pooja is done, we may take it as prasada and then you may smell the flowers.
