London's railway termini built up over the years since the 1860's - but in what order, and what ones no longer remain? Here's an animated timeline of what happened and when.

Waterloo wasn't always a terminus, as trains could continue towards London bridge, the bridge across the road is still there, with the footbridge linking Waterloo with Waterloo East built on top.

A most interesting video Geoff! A history of the main London Termini succinctly organised - thank you!

What about Nine Elms? This was the original terminus of the London and South Western Railway between 1838 and 1848 when it was succeeded by Waterloo.

Broad Street could have become "Euston for City folk" with the same hinterland and ideally the same rolling stock (so that trains could be timetabled alternately Euston/Broad Street). But that would have meant re-electrifying the Broad Street lines with 25 kV ac. British Rail would never have got the money from the Treasury for this, so effectively the Treasury killed off the line for lack of investment.

Can't find any reference to Baker Street which was the terminus of the Metropolitan Railway. Services extended to Liverpool Street & Aldgate on the Underground section.Metropolitan Railway is still in proud letters of the Marylebone Road Chiltern House.the Met was owned/ run by Watkin, whom also be built the Great Central into Marylebone, the folly tower and Wembley, even envisioning through trains from Manchester to Paris via a channel tunnel.

I believe Spa Road was the first terminus, before it later moved to London Bridge.

Great video. What about Devonshire Street temporary terminus at Mile End Gate though. It's a long time since I read it, but I remember it being mentioned in J.E. Connor's Liverpool Street to Ilford book.

This would be very interesting for Berlin, although today almost all of the termini don't exist anymore

It''s not always clear what's a terminus and what isn't. To me Blackfriars still is, while Moorgate is (for the Great Northern trains) and used to be (for the Midland trains). As an aside Baker Street could also be considered a terminus really, the Metropolitan Railway being much more like a mainline railway than the other tube lines.

Blackfriars is still a terminus station as it still has bay terminal platforms.

Great video, but what about Spa Road which was the terminus for the Greenwich line for 8 months before London Bridge? ...or is that just being picky!

Can you make a video of how did London grow as a city in the last 1000 years

Do video on London international terminai linked to ports?
Liverpool Street via Harwich & Netherlands
Charing Cross via channel ports.
Victoria with services to Dover, Folkstone and to France - the Golden Arrow. Waterloo and Southampton Docks and transatlantic liners, and after 1923 Euston to Holyhead and the Irish Free State?
Some ports had 'Marine ' stations at Folkstone, Dover, Newhaven etc

Either Ludgate Hill or Holborn Viaduct reopened as City Thameslink.

Yeah but isn’t Blackfriars the terminus for southeastern trains at peak hours

I would love to see an animated timeline of Manchester termini, only there is no "Manchesterist Manchesterist" channel. :(

But this was still pretty interesting.

I see, for some reasons railway built several terminals, not as large as New York Grand Central with 67 tracks or even Yaroslavsky Vokzal in Moscow with 18 tracks. What was the reason for such tendency? At least you have more suburban lines inside city instead of junctions further away, that's good.
