The coffee press is backwards. You need to flip the press so the teeth are facing down. You should get much better performance

To be fair to the product you should address your user error in setting up plunge incorrectly, and post a redo review

What about fuel usage? The Jetboil cooks in half the time of the Pocket Rocket. So one might deduce it uses half the fuel. So in the long run, the Jetboil would be cheaper. Food for thought.

Long time Pocket Rocket user. I've owned mine for probably close to 10 years. NEVER had ONE issue, and it has ALWAYS done its job, so I have no desire to try anything else. Thanks for the video, Aaron.

JetBoil System (all said and done when considered a personalised cary package ie. burner, pot, fuel for 1-2 people) is the fastest, most fuel efficient, practical/convenient, stable, as well as therefore 'becomes' the lightest, simplest, safest, loadout of setups available. While the mini stoves may be tempting based on size, weight, simplicity, or price... the overall package is what should be of the comprehensive thought process item by item. Experiments like yours will continually reveal similar results. I think you'd like the hanging system for your jetBoil. It's a worthwhile accessory.

I have an older generation of the Flash. I picked up the adapter ring, as I wanted to do my own vs. test (basically testing the burner only). I don't have a pocket rocket, so I tested the Flash burner against my little BRS stove. I used a Stanley Adventure Pot for both. My outcome was pretty much tied... 2 cups of water in about 2:30 for each set-up. You have to use a windscreen on either set-up if using outdoors. I use instant coffee when out and about, so I have no use for Java Kits.

Your using the plunge upside down, works better if you use it correctly..

Long time MSR guy, here, but have been looking at the Jetboil.  Thanks for doing the test/review. This saves me the money. I'll stick with the old faithful, tried and true Pocket Rocket.   Thank you.

It's the grounds you are using also. French presses do not do well with the fine grind you find in most coffee one buys. You have to grind the beans courser.

One thing i think about with jet boil is if you have a group of four people you can save weight potentially by taking one stove and fuel canister for everyone and fuel savings/ faster boil times will come in handy for larger groups and rehydrating meals with two boils, otherwise if it was just for myself i might consider simply turning the lightweight stove down to simmer and waiting a little longer.

I have a Flash that has been a solid shelf queen for about 3 years now. I primarily use am alcohol stove. When I take a canister stove, I use a Pocket Rocket 2. The Flash is convenient, but it's huge and single purpose. If you run out of gas or have a problem with the burner, you can't use the cup on an open fire. It's even kind of challenging to use it on another burner.

The PR2 is a solid performer. I have to admit, I love my alcohol stove. I don't like racing through backpacking trips. I'm in no hurry at meal time, and the alcohol stove is absolutely silent. It's awesome in the morning to prep some tea and drink it in my hammock without a sound.

You installed the coffee press screen upside down. No wonder you have grounds in your cup.

And the jetboil is great in windy conditions as no need for wind shield

The JetBoil is way more fuel efficient. If you compare a Titanium pot and a pocket rocket to the JetBoil the price is very similar in price. Both are good. Have both use the JetBoil more often than the MSR pocket rocket original.

Plunge needs to have the lip facing downward to trap everything...🤦‍♂️

You made a mistake with the coffee press. You had it screwed in backwards. The lip is suppose to be pointed down towards the bottom of the cup. That acts as the seal you were looking for.

Also, the Pocket Rocket can be used with a small pan to fry food and used between a couple people, unlike the Jetboil which only has the 1 attachment.

Yes the plunger is backwards but it is still not that great. Would like it to be a tighter fit and also that it would be easier to rinse.

So I can see why people would use fuel stove systems if they didn't have ready fuel out where they were, but I am always in areas with plenty of wood and other biofuels. So I just use a decent twig stove and that Stanley cookware (I have that exact set) and some others and I do perfectly fine... only time I might have an issue is if it's super wet outside, but even then...

You have the plunge upside down. Flip it and it works great.
