It's rare to see full Aikido forms in live sparring, but in this video we can see a text book Shomenuchi Kotegaeshi done in a sparring situation.

Beautiful! Great form by nage throughout the whole video, not just the successful technique. I wonder if she missed some other technique at 0:26, but I'm not going to be so bold as to second-guess what the optimal throw might have been... Could have been dangerous as well as difficult to look for the iriminage as it means ignoring the knife for a moment, but crossing my fingers it and other waza come up sometime!

Very cool! In slow motion, Josh's attack is visible rotating around Maya's axis. Showing the concept of centrifugal force. Very similar to the traditional form. This example also reminded me of the video you guys made about Stanley Pranin's kotegaeshi challenge. When the knife is in context, choosing this technique makes sense. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this. It looks like she got cut a couple of times, but only on the outside (dorsal side) of her forearms. Correct?

If so: good job. It’s the volar cuts that will more likely slash arteries.

I gotta say I like the footwork and I still think your approach to aikido could be experimented more against empty hand and every type style of martial art. Employ atemi as basis for the irimi and any waza should be when it presents itself.

Awesome work

You're doing a really good job, and it's good to see you again. To me It seems that you are walking in the footsteps of Tomiki, an onorable Path. I'd like you to make a video about his journey, i see so much similarities with yours.

She's actually very good. I don't think people that never practiced committed aikido can even _grasp_ how difficult it is to do what she does. "Running around" is what it seems. Very good aikido is what it is. He's actually cutting her path and trying to stab. He's also walking while she's running, which means he's trying to gain tactical advantage. The place is also small, in _real_ life situations this things develop in very large places. I really want to see what those judging could do in the same 60%-70% situation. I really want to see how less running around but more stabbing would be for any other martial artist. Without talking about how fast I've seen MMA 90+ KG guys run at the sight of a _real_ knife in real life situations. If you don't train for it do not expect to be good at it. How much do MMA train you against or with a weapon? And let's remember that Aikido is just _part_ of the Bujutsu (which infact is mixed martial arts), not a complete system. Anyways, to be fair, I'll also say that there's a lot of bullshit around Aikido out there. So beware.

What does it look like if the attacker methodically tries to walk the defender down? This seems a bit like knife guy is chasing the defender's tail, instead of intelligently trying to cut her off.

I respect aikido with all of my heart but I don't believe that running in circles is what Osensei would have wanted

never seen an aikido video where there is so much hopping and running around. should have stood still and entered, and subdued the attacker immediately. no?
