If you are climbing the Corporate Ladder you may waste YEARS of your life going in the wrong direction and the money you earn won't make you happy. Instead listen to my experience and play the corporate game in a smarter way...

How I knew the corporate ladder is totally RIGGED was I started a new job and in my first year I worked really hard and at the end of the year they said my performance could be better, then the next year I did the minimum effort and they said my performance was great this year 😂

Retire as soon as you can. It’s the best thing you can do for your sanity and health.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Corporate snakes and ladders.

One rule I've realized much sooner in my corporate career: if the company is making profit, you're underpaid. Do just enough to be a 'vital resource' for the team and ALWAYS appear busy.

I used to work for IT in Morgan Stanley in NY- everything you say is soooo true. I saw top performers held down just so they can stay on certain project and were ok with 70-80 hr weeks servicing their 4 major offices across the globe in different timezones. Some were associates for over a decade!

Wanna be the top dog? Start your own company and name yourself Emperor. Id rather be the captain of a canoe than the guy taking orders working for a giant cruise ship.

I’m an expert in my industry and know how to code and my coworker learns the superficial level of everything but does half the work and can’t code but lies about it….my company promoted him and then acts surprised that I was bitter. At this point it’s a joke and the lack of structure trickled down, everyone thinks who is promoted or given raises is completely random now

The games has changed, you have to use your job like they use you. Always have an exit plan, make sure you invest pay off debts and have an emergency fund etc Maintain a minimalist lifestyle regardless of income ...the goal should be how do I get off the corporate plantation as soon as you step in the door.

I am happy where I am in a startup. As Chief Scientific Officer, I contribute about 40 US patents to the company and have enough equity to satisfy all of my needs and wants. The CEO has more equity and a lot more stress. I will probably live longer and enjoy the value created more, even if the amount is a bit less.

This is especially true in the UK because half of your salary increase goes out in tax, NI and student loans anyway.
These jobs tend to be in London too so high living costs erode disposable income too.

If you wanna play the corporate game, at least do it in a low/ no tax jurisdiction.

Just left Morgan Stanley and literally had people on the department leaving constantly due to the constant lying from management

You speaking FACTS!!! I made the mistake you are referring to in terms of climbing that latter (why I needed the 99 to manager other people). What I found is that there may be 2 things better then quite quitting. 1. Work the most boring/antisocial job in the office (though your pay will be lower, you will outlast the ladder climbers). 2. If you want a job that operates off effort like school, then WORK for a school system or government, which play by similar rules. Just think about it, how many people do we all know who retired from coor jobs vs retired teacher, police, fire, etc.

False witness in corporate culture is the norm. When you go above and beyond and they tell you you didn't go above and beyond.

The major issue I have is that I am already doing the senior management level work as a junior manager including leading a high impact special project (which requires persons at a higher level to report to me). I thought over time leading this team would give me a promotion (as I have been promised almost a year now) but still no promotion or increase. The only reason I have stayed is that I am comparatively well paid and any other job opportunities outside my organization will not pay as much but hate the feeling of being manipulated into doing senior management work without getting senior management pay.

My previous manager told me he wants to promote me to a higher position, but my salary will be adjusted after 1 year.
Handed my notice 2 months later and he called me on the phone to offer a raise, just so I don't leave.

Best thing I ever did was become a contractor and switch companies every 12/6 months, renegotiate that rate and get more experience in different technologies to boot.

Yes the corporate ladder/working corporate is utterly ridiculous, but as long as you understand that from day one and not have any expectations, you shouldn’t be disappointed when things don’t work out for you.

I spent a year at a software company and quickly got fed up with the corporate culture. The whole time, the controller was always whining about people not following procedures he never really explained. Instead of enforcing the rules, he dumped all the annoying tasks on me that others were supposed to handle.

Whenever I suggested ways to make things more efficient, my ideas were shot down to keep the repeat offenders happy. I realized that these folks were more interested in control than actually managing. They didn't care about making improvements or building anything; they just wanted to complain and keep things the same. I shut down completely until they eventually fired me, fast forward months later I moved over to a well-funded nonprofit and these people get so excited when I make their lives easier and actively encourage me to improve things wherever I can. There's a lot of woke bullshit but I can tolerate that over listening to a passive-aggressive old man bitch about things he has the power to change.
