If its against the rules then its against the rules and hes being perfectly reasonable he didnt outright accuse his opponent of anything

“I’d like the rules to be followed”

“Wow what an unreasonable guy”

The problem is saying this after losing, not when it started.

He’s being 100% reasonable. The rules clearly state the issue he’s just calling it out like he sees it. He didn’t insult or have anything negative to say. Fairly reasonable.

Bro honestly just looks like he’s having a panic attack with all those people around him, he literally can’t take his eyes off the people passing by

Magnus: Came late during matches and let the opponent feel annoyed.

Opponent: Need to bring a watch to remind that he's always late.

Mqgnus: Annoyed

I honestly agree with him, trying to focus on chess while several strangers point their phones at you while speaking + a bunch of different stimulating things, it can become overbearing.

I would be frustrated too if I was in a legitimate tournament with my reputation on the line and I'm the only one following the rules.

He said that he was not accusing his opponent, who played brilliantly, and that he lost focus because the FIDE rules were not being adhered to by the other player, the spectators, and the tournament organizers.

That's beyond reasonable. He should be pissed that his time was not being respected. His opponent should be right there with him agreeing that the rules should be followed, because that way, it's much harder to be accused of cheating when you play a brilliant game and beat a harder opponent.

You don't want to have your best day ever in chess to be overshadowed by the possibility you cheated. So all players and spectators should abide by the FIDE rules in events organized by FIDE.

If people are upset Magnus complained that the rules are not being followed, then they probably don't give a single shit about chess and are just professional internet whiners.

It’s 100% reasonable. We make sure golfers have complete quiet for them to concentrate, so I can understand it here too.

A rule is a rule..respect it..follow it.

This is why exams are sat in silence with no outside distractions.

The fact he needs to tweet to get awareness over the failures is the real issue. The events and their organisers must hold themselves accountable.

Any mental competition should have clear boundaries where there can be no outside influences, either distractions or help. If there is no clear way of recording the crowd or players uninterrupted, there can always be a doubt raised that the winner didn’t get help.

If it's in the rulebook, it's in the rulebook. Why was his opponent wearing a watch, and why were people with smartphones allowed to mill around the playing area?

I'm with Magnus in this one. No cell phones or any other electronical device should be allowed close to the players/ tables.

If it's written in the rules, then Magnus is perfectly reasonable requesting rules being enforced for a tournament.

A new chess cheating scandal…
Magnus: I’m not accusing him of cheating.

He's 100% correct. Also, who to say that any one those top chess players are not on the spectrum and have some form of hyper focus but suffer from things distracting them. If it's a professional competition than the rules need to he followed and the outmost respect and silence must be given so that the concentration of those playing can be kept.

If it were me I would just stop playing, state why and that I’ll continue once the rules are met. If they don’t start rectifying it right away, get up and walk out! Plain and simple, he has the clout to do so!
