Peter Byck – Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there)

A conversation with Peter Byck, filmmaker and a wrangler of scientists, about regenerative vs conventional grazing and his new 4 part documentary series Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there). @carboncowboys

Peter gathered a bunch of scientists and very innovative farmers and their neighbours to answer one of the big questions in regenerative agriculture (that we so far only anecdotally answered). Does regenerative grazing work to restore soil, biodiversity, insects, birds, and create more farmers’ wealth? Data seems very positive about it until now, but more importantly: if the conventionally grazing neighbours were presented with the data, would they change their behaviour, would they also transition?

@Peter Byck
Thank you so much for your whole approach and all the work you've put into it. And to the interviewer.
This is so meaningful compared to conventional 'scientific' research approaches.
Also grateful for the potential message for farmers and policy makers in the Netherlands; the additional whole area of plant nutrition and moving away from using synthetic chemical fertilizers on cultivated pastures to restoring ecological functioning of cultivated pasture based livestock production systems.
When you factor in (& out) the negative impacts of the fertilizer and their products this adds a multiplying element to the benefits of AMP / regenerative management.
Fertilizers - factory energy consumption & emissions, logistic footprint, application & utilization inefficiencies & losses to the atmosphere and leaching into and pollution of water resources; negative health effects of excess N on plant nutritional value and toxic effects of nitrates in produce.
Another series!
Hopefully the ecdysis 1000 farms study adds to the evidence for regenerative agriculture.
Hopefully you can get funding to place your films on YouTube or other free to view channels for viewers without Netflix subscriptions.

@PeterByck - series name - suggest that you put a more aligned subtitle if any at all; the 'you can see the devil down there ' at odds with the message of regenerating life & hope for planetary and human wellbeing through living roots going down deep into the soil carrying life-giving and soil building carbon, encouraged by AMP grazing mgt.

😂yes, I read “you can see the devil” & had two thoughts - “funny!” & “oh dear, the Christian farmers aren’t going to like that.”

THINK OF THE VITAMINS, MINERALS, TRACE CRIMINALS, ETCETERA, THAT ARE BENEFICIAL TO LIVESTOCK AND LIVESTOCK EATERS THAT COULD BE MISSING BY NOT UTILIZING NATIVE PLANTS.
