I think it was a decent move to ditch the 898 naming scheme and go ahead with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, as it helps start over on a new naming scheme. It wouldn't make sense for the Snapdragon 8 to eventually bleed into the Snapdragon 9 just because it ran out of names. Also, this naming scheme is much more streamlined.
