I understand why you use your beautifully trained dogs, but it would be so helpful for you to use an actual non-trained puppy so we can see exactly how to get to the point where they will respond to the command.

The "ding" in the video sounds just like our potty bell. Our puppy uses it when he wants to go outside even to play. He came in from playing outside (door is open) and had just come to do his twenty-minute check on me and was getting a reward for remembering to come during playtime when the video played the bell effect. He got real excited, his head whipped to the door and he ran to the door to ring the bell too and ran back outside.

This McCann Dog Training is great! I have a 13-week old puppy and it's really helped. I've always been a 6' leash, no treats and choke chain guy. Since finding McCann I'm using food rewards with great success. I love all the videos and watch them religiously. Thanks McCann Dog Training!

Al of these training tips are obvious I suppose, but only obvious when they've first been pointed out by a good trainer like yourself. So thanks so much for this. You've taken great care to not only teach the commands but to explain the logic behind it from the perspective of both dog and owner. I've just recently rescued an abused and very nervous older street dog from another country (Spain), so I'm guessing I've got some added obstacles to cross such as language and age as well as her level of trust in us. Any advice regarding this would really help. Greetings from Scotland. 👍

Helpful! Wondering though, I have read that once they are doing what you say, you should just say “good” (or whatever) instead of saying “good sit” or “good stay” because they’re already doing it - so it’s kind of confusing for them. Just like when you say “no bark” they don’t understand that no applies to the barking they just here “bark”. That was all very helpful to me.

My puppy learned sit and shake a paw in like 15min. But took 3 weeks to really get her to understand lying down and now she ONLY lies down no matter what command we say. Also, she only listens when she can actually see the treat in our hand. Trying to teach her to stay today definitely didn't work out LOL wish me luck.

Thanks so so McCann Dogs for all the wonderful instructive videos - i’ve had dogs all my life and have just adopted a black lab female – it’s been a long time since I’ve had a puppy and your videos have been of immense value in helping me bond with and manage the puppy – particularly things like the house lead and the longer lead outside and your infinite patience has been an inspiration– Thank you so much again and wishing you all the best – Toby from Sydney Australia

My dog will stay forever when we aren’t on an obstacle course. On the obstacle course he gets so excited he starts before I can get out in front of him. Any suggestions?

When training to stay, if the dog moves and doesn't stay, what do you do? Return them to the position and try again without a reward? give them a negative verbal command? Haven't found this part in any videos yet... I'll keep looking.

Hi. So I have an almost 2 year old golden doodle. He is very very food driven. I am trying to train him to stay. So I have a question. If I tell him break while I’m standing however far away from him and he comes is that a mistake?

4.5 month king charles cavalier puppy. We have stay pretty solid inside. Duration 2+mins, stay at distance/out of sight (e.g. I can leave the room and walk upstairs and return) and distractions (toys). However sometimes he will fail maybe 1 in 10-20 times as I've pushed things too far time outside of room or toys getting to close. What's the best way to correct the behaviour. I currently calmly take him back to the original position and reset - rewarding a look at me, then a down before issuing the stay command again. Is this the right thing to do or not? Should I end the training of stay at this point and try again the next day

Stay outside in the park is significantly harder at the moment. Again best way to correct a fail if it happens outside. Only at 1-2 meter distance for less than 10 secs at the moment but again sometimes he fails maybe 1 in 10 times. What's the best approach? If I reduce distance and time he'll get it but occasional fails are part of progressing.
