SCRAPPER Movie Review | Harris Dickinson | Best of 2023

We have a rave review of "Scrapper," a Sundance award-winning comedy/drama that's full of wit, heart and surprises. Lola Campbell stars as a 12-year-old girl who's lost her mom and is living on her own in working-class London. When the father she never knew (Harris Dickinson) shows up unexpectedly, the two must figure out how to reconcile. It's the terrific first feature from writer-director Charlotte Regan. Christy and Alonso loved it and can't recommend it highly enough. In theaters, expanding through October.

I totally empathize with you Alonso my dad died when I was 17, homeless and mentally ill. I have 1 photo of him and his face is half cut off because he’s wearing a lampshade to entertain 6 month old me. Younger folks don’t appreciate having lengthy social media accounts full of memories to look at when your parents are gone! My grandmother had it even worse. Her mother died giving birth to her in 1923 and because they were so poor in Arkansas she never took a photo. My gran used to dream about her mom at night never having a face. Used to make me so sad.💔🥺

I'm glad they rated the film so high. It's definitely one of those films that the more you think about it, the more is there. Like, no spoilers, but I'll just say that social services aren't as completely inept as Georgie would have us think. It's more to the point Christy makes in that they know she's well and not in a dangerous situation and they probably have a lot more dire cases to deal with so they'll just call every day to make sure she's OK. And agree, Harris Dickinson makes really interesting choices. Another actor might have turned on the charm or sopped it up but he's always so subtle and intuitive.

The Brits are my favorite probably of walking the line between too corny and too comedic. Plus being a huge fane of dry/sarcastic/dark movies w/ heart this is right in my lane.

This film is amazing. It’s been out for a while in the UK but I only saw it this week. I wasn’t sure whether to wait and watch it at home but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s now my number three film of the year.

I think the documentary elements and the stuff with the spiders do detract a little from the overall tone, but it doesn’t reduce the film’s charm or how powerful it is.

The scene when the father (and audience) discovers what Georgie is doing in the locked room will stay with you long after the film is over!
