Sequential LED trunk light strip on a 2014 BMW i3 REx
More detailed instructions on how to install in an i3. The main wiring connections that need to be made are 12V accessory, ground, left turn signal, right turn signal, brake and reverse. I chose not to connect the driving lights as I did not like the function or look of these modes.
I used the 12V power outlet in the trunk for the 12V accessory and ground connections. The socket just pops out of the side wall and the wires are easily tapped into once that is done. Both turn signals and the brake light were accessed in the right side (passenger side) tailgate hinge. This is where the wire pass out of the tailgate and into the body of the car. The light wiring needed to be lengthened to reach this area of the i3. There is a plastic cover on the hinge that can be unhooked and moved to the side to reveal the wires. I turned the turn signals/brake lights on and used a multimeter to search for the corresponding wire. This part is best completed with a second person.
Once all the wires are located, splice and solder the connections and tape them back up. Test all functions and put everything back together. The install took my brother and I about 3 hours total. I drilled a small hole, just big enough for the wiring harness to the lights to pass through, in the passenger side bumper, on the vertical black section in the lower right next to the rubber bump stop for the tailgate, to run the wiring into the body of the car cleanly. If I remember correctly the diagram included with the lights has the wiring running into the car on the driver side so if you choose to install the lights the way I did, you will need to switch the turn signal wire connections left to right so they sequence in the proper direction. Hopefully this helps anyone out there who may want to try this install themselves. Good luck!
