I was whistling the saxophone solo (as I do from time to time) in a supermarket queue the other day & when I'd reached the end a woman's voice from behind me started Echo beach, far away in time.

It brought a smile to both our faces.

"Echo Beach" is a song recorded by Canadian band Martha and the Muffins in 1979. Written by band member Mark Gane, it was released as a single from their Metro Music album in 1980 and won the Juno Award for single from the 'year. It was certified gold in Canada on October 1, 1980, a month after Metro Music achieved gold status. Their best known title is Echo Beach; it is also the only one to have had real international success, although they have had several others in Canada. It reached No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart, and No. 6 on the Australian Singles Chart. While Echo Beach did not exist as a real location, it was a symbol of a place everyone wants to escape to when they're not where they want to be. The inspiration was Sunnyside Beach on the shoreline of Lake Ontario in Toronto.

My favorite thing about every song on YouTube is that the first comment always asked if anyone is still listening in the present year and the second comment is always that it was my spouse’s favorite song and my spouse passed away, and we played it at the funeral- lol - have trouble believing that anyone played Echo Beach at their funeral
