The BMW X5 is now in its fourth generation (G05) and is even more popular than ever. It’s a good, do-it-all luxury SUV - but owners seem to like them so much that they want to be buried in them, apparently. Tim Rodie reviews the X5 to find out why.

The X5 comes in X-Line and M Sport trim levels with a wide choice of engines. Tim breaks down the differences so you can see which one is right for you.

Engine choice:

Diesel
xDrive 30d - 265hp, 3.0-litre 6 cylinder (40mpg) Tim’s pick!
xDrive 40d - 340hp version of 30d
M50d - 400hp, 5 second 0-62mph time

Petrol
xDrive 40i - 340hp, 3.0-litre petrol (B58)
xDrive 45e - 394hp, 50 mile electric range (B58 hybrid)
M50i - 530hp, 4.4-litre V8

All are four-wheel drive.

I am a former master tech. These are very solid. So were the older e70 and F15 generations.

My dads first bmw suv was a f15 x5 with a 2.0l diesel and that car was so big, beautiful and comfortable, ever since that hes only bought x5s and currently theres 2 of the new x5s in the garage, one is the 3.0l diesel and one is the 3.0l petrol, we would also take these to the grave with us. Incredibly comfortable and daily drivable cars

Extremely difficult to find well-specced second hand because so many people lease base spec poverty models because they can't actually afford one.

In Canada the 4th generation pre-LCI came in two body styles (xLine & M Sport) and 4 different engines (xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i and M Competition) there's no diesel models; 20in wheels were standard on all models with option for 21in and 22in.

For the 2024 LCI base package xLine xDrive40i with the 375hp 3 liter inline 6 starts at $86k (£50k)

I love my X5, but trunk space SUCKS. My biggest gripe is that you cant even put a set of golf clubs in length wise, which is a joke. When we go on vacation with our 2 kids, we have to take her QX60 because the X5 trunk space is just way too small.

just brought a x5 45e, awsome car, great mpg to with the electric motor, getting 40 miles on a charge

That boot floor gas strut is a nice touch. Usually such a faff to keep holding it up

Just based on your intro that can tell you don't know anything about X5 m40i from 2019 to now I have 2020 has none of all and i obeys my command very well even sometimes I tried to abuse it, lovely it is smooth all time.

Just a question regarding engine reliability, are the 3 litre diesel MHT (mild hybrid) reliable or are there engine problems regarding the new hybrid system?
