The Tune Weavers 'Happy, Happy Birthday Baby'

One of the best recordings of the doo wop period was "Happy, Happy Birthday Baby" which was written by Margo Sylvia & Gilbert Lopez, members of The Tune Weavers, who recorded it in March 1957. Originally released by Casa Grande Records, it was unsuccessful until Chess Records bought the distribution rights and released it on its Checker subsidiary label. The single reached number four on the R&B chart and number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The lead vocal was performed by Margo Sylvia with back up by Margo's husband John Sylvia, her brother Gilbert J. Lopez, and cousin Charlotte Davis. I was 2 y/o when my mom recorded and sang this classic along with my dad (John Sylvia) Uncle Gil (Ma's brother) and Autie Charlotte. We lived in a big house in Dorchester, Ma. And we (3 brother's) watched mommy and the group rehearse along with other famous groups. I miss that era. My baby sister Nichole came later; I enjoyed traveling w/mommy & the group, and watching them on T.V. and hearing them on the radio. It was natural back then, and today it's facinating to know that, thats my family.

1957, I was 8. Mom would take me out for a burger and fries every once in a while. The jukebox on the table in the booth had this tune and 'In The Still of the Night'. Five songs for a quarter. Those were the days.

I've always been a sucker for 50's music and this song is a perfect example of why. 50's music will always be tops in my opinion.

I’ve called my daughter every New Year’s Eve at midnight and sing this song to her. Her birthday is January 1st. I’ve done this since she was born and she’s 39 now. Her kids have joined in the tradition and I get a call every midnight on my birthday. The look on my granddaughter’s face the first time she heard “Nana’s song” on the radio was priceless.

I have always loved this song. I sent it to my ex-wife (married 1971) for her BD in October. Married for eleven years, had many ups and downs, but have remained friends through it all. It's all good.

I still have the original 45rpm record on the Chess label and still play it. It's just such a beautiful song. I also have and dearly love Merry Merry Christmas Baby which came out a number of years later. Beautiful music like this just isn't created anymore. I understand Margo is passed on now but she lives on in her families hearts and in the wonderful music she created. Those of us who are her fans have not forgotten her and her wonderful family musical group.

I was ten years old in 1957 when this song knocked most of the family flat, my two older sisters, me, and even our mom. The harmonies are very sophisticated and hard to match. The tune is good enough that even a solo performer can put this song across, thanks to lyrics moving enough to touch even a ten-year-old.

Went to a doo wop show April 20th. The Tuneweavers performed. John Sylvia was one of them along with Charlotte Davis and two other recent members. They were fantastic. John and Charlotte were presented with a gold record for this song since they were past over for one 50-55 years ago. It was very emotional. I am thrilled I saw history made.
