Fort Lauderdale airport shut down after historic flooding

Historic rainfall in Fort Lauderdale shut down the airport completely, leaving passengers stranded. NBC News’ Guad Venegas has more details on the torrential downpour that lead the city to declare a state of emergency.

Flooding in low lying land in Florida is far more damaging and destructive than it is in other places where the land is higher above sea level. The flood water fills septic tanks and systems below ground and render septic systems useless to the point where they backup into homes. The sitting flood water soften the ground around all high-rise office and condo buildings, possibly placing them in danger of sinking, tilting or even collapsing. Much of the fresh drinking water in Florida is transported in ground level aqueducts instead of inside of sealed pipelines, and contaminated flood waters can render their drinking water supply useless and unsafe to consume. Flooding like this can also cause major problems for city municipal sewerage systems.

Area that gets hits with natural disasters frequently and require hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild should be permanently vacated. It makes no sense to spend money to rebuild every year again and again. It's just plain stupidity.

Whether or not that is salt water or sweet water remains to be seen. Makes quite a difference in buying a flooded car totaled out for parts.
