Hi Mr Norcross, great video on sword maintenance. We all have swords that are loose in Saya. Very clear and easy to follow instructions.

That's creative, I didn't think adding material was a solution, especially if you want to preserve the Saya without removing material

Thank you for sharing this because I have this problem. Will definitely do this and so simple. 🙂

Very helpful, have a few I should shim, but always have been worried about ruining my saya. Could you do a video (if it's in your wheelhouse) about lacquering the ito? I know some do that to preserve them and/or tighten them up sometimes. Thank you!

I really appreciate this quick guide. I have this problem with a chokuto that was gifted to me by my best friend who has passed on. I've been trying to get it fixed up. Thank you Sensei Norcross.🙂

Interesting. I've always shimmed the Mune side, but this makes sense and is probably easier!
One thing I would say: the glue on the veneer tends not to react and adhere with the wood glue, so I just sand it off.
If badly worn (in my case after a 2 day intensive seminar) I have utilised the handle of the little wooden forks we find here (mainly in Fish & Chip shops) somewhat thicker, but can be filed down easily to suit once glued in.
A big 'no-no', and I've seen it done, is shimming the sides of the saya, which puts too much pressure on the seam joining the to halves.

Probably wrong to do but I have used small strips of leather for years to repair my saya. Keeps the sword nice and quiet too.

Have/could you do a How To on a rattling Saya? The sound irritates me & is a constant reminder that the sword is cheap - even though it's an awesome cutter.

Where can we order that exact roll of birch wood? I had to buy a kit that came with shims already, to repair one of my saya.

What's that smoke that I see in some of your videos?
