SPOKANE, Wash. -- A new fire popped up Sunday morning within Spokane city limits.

The brush fire was burning on Thorpe Rd. near the south side of Hwy. 195. Spokane Co. Emergency Management issued Level 2 evacuations, meaning PREPARE TO LEAVE AT A MOMENT'S NOTICE for those in the area north to Thorpe, south to 44th, west to Merryweather and east to Hwy. 195.

The evacuations have been downgraded to Level 1, meaning GET READY TO LEAVE.

Thorpe Rd. was shut down just before noon near Hwy. 195. It has since reopened.

According to Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer, the fire was started near a transient camp, and the cause was determined to be from illegal camping.

KXLY's Bronte Sorotsky could see one firefighting helicopter working above the fire. At least 15 acres were burned by 12:30 p.m.

There were limited fire crews at the scene because they were already being stretched between the Gray fire in Medical Lake and the Oregon fire near Elk.

Illegal camping. "Soft words" for homeless.

just say "the homeless"....not illegal camping. I also believe the Maui fire was started this way also... check the earliest aerials of where the fire started. It was up in a tree line canyon on the hillside far above the Lahiana town. The dry conditions and gusty winds blew it down to the beachfront...but it didn't start there. That fire cost many lives and billions of $$ worth of damage. When will be say...enough! Just had a 200 acre fire burn here in rural San Diego that started in a canyon homeless camp and got close to homes before it was put out . We need the gov to clean/clear them all out and make new laws. 86% of Brush/forest fires are started by humans...not down electrical lines or lightening.

I’m waiting to take my RT-130, Crew boss wildfire and all other courses I can take this fall/spring and eventually have my own brush truck business (type6) for contracting purposes with the Federal Government under VIPR procurement program within the next two years.
I find this type of hard work to be very rewarding and purposeful.

Well that's the last time I treat homeless people with any sort of dignity, I've seen too many fires started by them,

Ban camping by regular people amongst the forest, allow camping by degenerates on the streets of cities.

Thousands of acres burnt and firefighters are stretched thin, while Canada has had 34 million acres burnt and they’ve been burning since spring with over a thousand fires currently burning. Now those poor firefighters are most certainly stretched thin, umm 🤔. No comparison
