One of the most effective things you can do to protect yourself from catching a germ and becoming a statistic, whether it’s a global pandemic like COVID-19 or just every single other day of your life, is something that people have been trying to get you to do since you were like 2. Wash your hands. With good ol’ soap. And do it the right way. That’s it. Here’s the science of handwashing!

Hey smart people. Wash your hands. That's all. Here's the real science of why soap is such a darn good germ killer, and the scientifically-approved method for washing your hands. I'm on Twitter and Instagram: @DrJoeHanson @okaytobesmart

That cell bursting experiment at the end is genuinely one of the most interesting experiments I have ever seen. Never thought I would see cell guts without a microscope.

So.. my kid was right when she and I ran around the yard, blowing bubbles to "kill the invisible monsters" she was sure were hiding everywhere? I'm never gonna live this down.

Surgical soap is so effective because it has a purple dye in it that shows when you haven't scrubbed all the soap off so you don't carry the soap into surgery.

Hey, be careful with laundry detergent! You can use it to wash your hands, but you need to dilute it first. The concentrated form can damage your hands.

Loved the science info, but one critique: after done washing your hands, you turned off the faucet (the last time), with said hand! Always use an elbow, wrist, or paper towel to avoid recontaminating after done rinsing.

Thank you for using your platform to help people understand how to do this seemingly simple task properly. It's surprising how difficult it is to do a good job cleaning your hands.

A good way to think of it is to imagine you have written someones number on your hand; we've all done it, and how hard/thoroughly you have to scrub it off with soap, now imagine your hands are covered in writing!

I have always washed my hands to a high standard, and being a chef I'm always washing my hands like 8 times a hour easy....
