Historic Northampton steps into the future with a new solar array.

Historic Northampton went live with a new solar photovoltaic power system this summer as part of Northeast Solar’s ongoing program that brings free solar power to non-profits in Western MA. The project was funded by two donors with roots in Northampton.

Historic Northampton was established in 1905 as a non-profit organization and has since worked tirelessly to preserve the rich history of the city. The museum is made up of four properties: the Nathaniel Parsons House (which dates back to 1719!), the Isaac Damon House, Pomeroy-Shepherd House, and the Shepherd Barn.

While the mission of Historic Northampton has always been to preserve the past, the board has made it a priority to start thinking about the future. The museum started with small steps like implementing a recycling and using the pedal people for trash removal. This summer marks the biggest step on their preservation journey when Co-Executive Director, Laurie Sanders flipped the switch on the museum’s new solar panels. Today, Historic Northampton runs on clean solar energy.
