Everyone Told Us We HAD to Visit Antigua, Guatemala!
Показать описание
We packed SO much into one day in Antigua! Sadly, we had to leave Evie behind in order to visit some of these spots, but we had an incredible day exploring the famous city of Antigua. Our first stop of the day is Antigua's Central Park, which is the centre of all the excitement in Antigua. From here, the city fans out in beautiful cobble stone streets that have been preserved for centuries thanks to Antigua's status as a UNESCO world heritage city. Just a couple of blocks from Central Park is the famous Santa Catalina Arch, which is easily Antigua's most identifiable man-made landmark (the volcanoes surrounding Antigua trump the arch, but they're natural of course!).
A stunning church called La Merced caps off the street near Santa Catalina Arch, and turned into one of our favourite stops during our day exploring Antigua. The church's façade is incredible, but we quickly learned that the best part of the church is the roof! Antigua, Guatemala is surrounded by volcanoes, which makes this one of the most beautiful cities we have ever visited. rom the top of La Merced church, we had an incredible view of the volcanoes, specifically Volcan de Agua which seems to come out of nowhere next to this small city.
Antigua is also full of incredible cafes, which can probably be attributed to Guatemala's world-class coffee. We popped into a cafe called Rainbow cafe to test out locally-grown Guatemalan coffee for ourselves, and share one of our favourite digital nomad hacks with you.
After coffee, we made our way to Mercado Municipal, which is a HUGE market where you can buy absolutely anything. After wandering the narrow "streets" and getting as lost as possible, we stumbled upon a tiny but busy hole in the wall selling carne asada - one of Mico's favourite meals! Naturally, we sat down and bumbled through ordering in our broken Spanish without a menu, and were pleasantly surprised by what a few dollars could buy us for a meal here in Antigua!
Since arriving in Antigua, we've learned that there are lots of ruins in the city as a result of the earthquakes that are very common in this part of Guatemala. For our last stop of the day, we visited the ruins of the gorgeous Santa Clara Convent. Weddings are regularly held here, and it was obvious as to why!
There is so much to do in Antigua, Guatemala, and you should definitely plan for more than a day if you are traveling to Antigua soon! But, for a one day itinerary, we think this jam-packed day is a great way to spend your time.
