USMLE Step 1 - Lesson 71 - Ketone Bodies

Ketone bodies are produced either because of alcoholism, or more commonly from starvation or diabetic ketoacidosis in which gluconeogenesis cannot happen. Ketone bodies are a source of energy when glucose is not available. Fat can be turned into acetyl-CoA then HMG-CoA then acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate where it is transported to the tissues and can be used in the TCA cycle.
