The sound of vinyl on tube gears, especially when you experiment w/ different tubes, is addictive. I’ve been using a complete Cary Audio setup (SLP 05 pre/VT 500 phono/805 AE amp) since last year and really the sound of the system became more enjoyable than when I was using my amazing YBA Signature SS system. Maybe as I’m getting older the sound of tube becomes more enjoyable than SS. Also, it could be having a phono preamp instead of a preamp w/ phono stage. I tried mixing SS w/ tube but the magic touch was lost in my system. It could be due to my Kharma speakers synergy w/ tube gears.
I’m glad you’re experimenting w/ tubes, it’s a complete different experience. Great videos!

Audio Creative also makes the Groovemaster tone arms which are very good, I have one and is sonically on par with my SMEV that is at least twice as expensive.

The Thöress Phono Enhancer is a champion. The price is also a deterrent, but it has that charming, musical sound that's also fast and dynamic. Dig it !;)

Modwright PH 9.0 is tube based phono pre with outboard power supply. $3500 new. With tube rolling it is a giant killer throwing huge sounstage. Highly recommended.

That thing you described as an output transformer is indeed a choke ( inductor) to smooth any ripple off the DC high voltage line ...

Great review! If you are into testing phono stages, you may want to check out the Lejonklou Entity which is roughly at the same price point (MC but solid state). Furthermore, I'd love to see what your feedback is on the AudioNote gear, such as an M3 RIAA phono amp. Thanks for all the great content!!

This was designed by the creator of the DDDAC NOS DAC who has made some interested projects.
I don't like the tube choices for this though -- would prefer 12A*7-types, which are more readily available and can be bought new from JJ (EU made) rather than just Russia/China suppliers or expensive NOS.
You should also take a look at the Sun Valley EQ1616, which is a Japanese DIY project (supplied to Europe/North America by VKMusic). It has far better tube options.

I saw that Primaluna just released few months ago their first phonostage, (for double the price but MM & MC), I read some good reviews about it but I haven't been able to listen to it yet. Might be worth givin' a check!..

I'm going to hold out until I find a tube-buffering phono amp with the features I deem necessary, like a subsonic filter and adjustable gain to match to match to different cartridges. I hope I find one someday.
