Interview Transcript:

Dr. Sai Satish: Ganesh was there when it all started, like this whole TAVI revolution, which India is slowly starting to ride like a wave. He was there way back when it started – Over 3000 implants to his credit; Over 200 centers he has initiated in TAVI. He has proctored some of the world's best Proctors who are proctoring everyone else today. Ganesh Manoharan, thank you for coming. Thank you for being here.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Absolute pleasure. Thank you so much for asking me and making me part of this project.

Dr. Sai Satish: It's an honor. What drives Ganesh Manoharan?

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: That's a very good question. I think what drives me, it has to be going back to seeing what drove my parents, I think. And my grandfather, I think. So people usually ask me, who’s your role model? And my role model was not some movie star or some singer. My role models were my parents actually. Yeah. You know, they were… I was born in Malaysia and they sacrificed enormously for my education, for my upbringing.
And so, I could see them working so hard, not for their benefit, but for my benefit. Then I had it very clear in my head as I was growing up that I should have no excuse, but to be good at what I do. Whether successful or not, that's up to others to judge. But just to be good and to excel in everything I did. So that's, I guess what drives me.

Dr. Sai Satish: Coming back to India, where do you see this therapy going?

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: I think it's a difficult question to answer in a sentence. Mainly because I think TAVI or TAVR as a technology clearly saves lives. But it comes with a big cost…baggage to it. It's also a complex device. It's not a single person operated device. So… But I think India has gone leaps and bounds in terms of adopting technology. I think India... I mean, India people, I think do see a belief that I think wasn't there for a while. I think leadership coming from the senior clinicians in India and I think also the leadership from the politicians. I think it's changed how Indians look at themselves. And the outside world is perceiving India in a very different way.

Dr. Sai Satish: Positively?

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Yeah. The only thing India is a definite player in the global sense. Opportunities are great, but with any opportunity that should be good, trusted and strong leadership. And if I can play a small part in that…

Dr. Sai Satish: I was just gonna say we have you for that. So that’s started.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: It’s just some one of many, I think.

Dr. Sai Satish: Yeah.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: But you know, you already have me, you’re one and there are many other more senior people who have done it already in India, who have pushed boundaries in their own way. And I think, you know, if we can freely share knowledge, that's a good posture available. Yeah.

Dr. Sai Satish: So, Ganesh, coming back to the big board that says Sentient behind you.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Yeah, very clearly.

Dr. Sai Satish: So, you've been in meetings for a long time and you are instrumental in helping put this program together and helping this course. What do you think? What do you think of what you've seen so far?

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Objective was to keep it real, right? To keep it practical.

Dr. Sai Satish: Simple and real.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: And I think that's what we did correctly. I think, you know, you clearly have put in a lot effort on the attention to detail. I'm a very “detail” person. And I think that's what's coming out of here. I think it also reflects on where the masses see where TAVI is going to go in India, and structural heart is going to go in India. It's a big, big new area for growth. And I think that's good.

Dr. Sai Satish: I want to end by saying one quote, okay? …which sums up what you said. “He who sees us to try, to do better, sees us to do well.” And that's just something that's come out in almost every statement you've said. So, thank you so much once again.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Absolutely.

Dr. Sai Satish: And I can't wait to get off camera and bounce ideas off for Sentient 2020.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Absolute pleasure. And thank you very much for making me or having me as part of this project.

Dr. Sai Satish: It was my honor. All of us are privileged to have you here.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Again…it’s Mutual. Me too.

Dr. Sai Satish: Thank you so much, Ganesh.

Dr. Ganesh Manoharan: Thank you.

Dr. Sai Satish: Thank you.
