#shorts Meet the BOAT, the brightest gamma-ray burst of all time.
Gamma-ray bursts are energetic explosions that occur when a massive star dies. The collapse sets off jets of gamma rays zipping away from the dead star and if those jets happen to be pointed at Earth, astronomers get a great view, as these new images reveal. This particular burst, according to one astronomer, was a once-in-a-century event, maybe once in 1,000 years.
Named GRB 221009A, the powerful cosmic show was probably triggered by a supernova giving birth to a black hole in a galaxy about 2.4 billion light-years away.

You got to love those intergalactic death rays that are always flying around the universe and you can't see coming 💀

The amount of energy characteristic of GRBs is staggering and difficult to describe verbally. This would be a great topic for a full length video.
Thanks and have a great week.

I try not to worry about the future because I know a direct hit from a big enough GRB could kill us all at any moment. Good enough reason for me to have fun instead of fold laundry most days.

Almost instantaneously converting many solar masses into a coherent beam of x-radiation and highly relativistic subatomic particles, is not something you want to be near.

It’s not when a star dies, when a star dies it releases a super nova. When a black whole is born, it releases a gamma ray.

Woah, I didn’t know events like that could affect us from so far away. The other day I noticed a red star flickering a lot for the first time to such a degree…I wonder if I was looking at it or not 🤔
