Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures #35 - SDI to HDMI Conversion Excursion

Our star-crossed IT guy, Krazy Ken, is back with a new mission—convert SDI video from his Blackmagic URSA to HDMI. Sounds simple—sounds very simple. However, if it sounds easy, it's probably too good to be true.

Krazy Ken got his hands on some more CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY. Stick around for more from Krazy Ken and the Computer Clan by clicking the subscribe button and the *Bell* button beneath the video. That way you'll get new upload notifications sent right to your device! And with our 10th anniversary coming up, you won't want to miss what we have planned…

"For being called Universal Serial Bus, there sure are a lot of variants!" LOL!

Did you end up mounting the converter to the URSA? If so how did you do it? Looking at this exact same solution so i dont have to replace my monitors and wireless video

Thanks for doing this. I bought two of these units. The first one did not work, there is no warranty whatsoever on these: it's just a gamble. I bought a second one, same thing. I watched your video for some assistance. I can't muck with the frame rate or resolution. I have to shoot 1080p in 24fps or 30fps because I'm putting this into an BMD ATEM Mini Pro for live streaming. I complained to BMD but got no help. I purchased another unit made by AVMedia it worked initially, now it is dead.

euh, you know the front sdi connector(next to the lens mount) puts out 1080 for external monitors, Right. you seem to use the back SDI out. That puts out 4K (or what ever you have set) BTW, that converter does not down convert 4K to 1080. And furthermore, you can take power for the monitor from front connector below it too.

Those mini displays are ropey AF. Bought one years ago as a second monitor for a BMD cam and it had the same weird issues. It’s something with the resolution?..

Can you record 4k in camera while monitoring through this adapter SDI to HDMI on an HD monitor or hdtv?
In other words, can the SDI output be setup for a different resolution and frame rate than what is being recorded? (In my case record at 4k cinemaDNG 24p... recording and 1080 60i out through the SDI to HDMI converter and to a regular HDTV)

While watching I remembered Jim carrey, 😀.
Bro im using BMCC 2.5 k. I tried to connect it with Lilliput monitor through the same converter you mentioned.
So. Do you have any tips instead of buying video assist

I've heard great things about Lilliput monitors, and they supposedly do HDMI<->SDI conversion as well, though obviously they're not cheap, so the Video Assist may be your best bet.

you're funny, i have the same problem with my blackmagic production camera 4k looks like my sdi is broken or the camera sends a signal that my lcd display can't view.

Set the project to 60fps, set the off-speed frame rate to 24. That's an easy solution.

I mean, you have a flip-out display on the camera, why bother with an extra display on top (which is not that much larger than the flip-out) if you're "never going to use it in the field"? If you had a RED camera, I can understand considering RED cameras don't come with anything. This just seems like a silly purchase to me.
