What is moral licensing?

A few years ago, in a CNN interview Malcolm Gladwell explained moral licensing using the example of Julia Gillard, Australian former politician who served as the 27th prime minister of Australia from 2010 to 2013.
His words, “ She was subjected to the most extraordinarily devastating unbelievable level of misogynistic vitriol and she ends up giving this famous speech in the parliament in which you feel she has finally had enough. That is a classic example of how to open the door to the first female prime minister in history and then feel free to say the most unspeakable things about her. That's what happens to every woman who enters into a previous male world.”
He labels this - Moral licensing, a cognitive bias, which enables individuals to behave immorally without threatening their self-image of being a moral person.
