Heads roll as Soviet-era statue to Russian-Ukrainian 'friendship' comes down in Kyiv

A statue hailing Russian-Ukrainian friendship in the city of Kyiv, Ukraine is coming down - starting with the head of the "Russian" man in said statue - as of Tuesday, another symbol of the destroyed relations between the two nations amidst the ongoing Russian invasion.

The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday accused the U.K. of making statements encouraging Ukraine to use Western weapons to carry out strikes on the Russian territory, warning that if it happens the Russian military could retaliate by hitting government structures in Kyiv.

Meanwhile Ukraine’s top security official, Oleksiy Danilov, said Russian forces have attempted to break through Ukrainian defences “along almost the entire front line of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions.”

In a marked escalation of Russian rhetoric, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was asked on state TV about the prospect of a Third World War and whether the current situation was comparable to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis that nearly caused nuclear war.

“The danger is serious, real. And we must not underestimate it,” Lavrov said, according to the ministry’s transcript of the interview. “NATO, in essence, is engaged in a war with Russia through a proxy and is arming that proxy. War means war.”
